Questions about shows! If you don't mind me asking a few (I think) simple questions about showing your dogs!! Do you train your own furbabies for the ring?? What are the commands they need to know? How much does it cost to have someone else show your dog? Is there another site were I can get information about upcoming shows in my area (other then AKC) If Petey's soothy areas clear I think I would like to show him (at least once) But he has no manners now!! One more question, I think his tail might be too short, is that a major fault? He is so tiny, his tail is a little nub!! :( |
I don't have the answers but sure would like to know also!! I do know there is a place here where I live that will give free handling lessons - I want to get started with this and also my daughter wants to be a junior handler. So I hope you get some info here - looking forward to reading the replies. :D |
I train my own, but would love to attend training classes for the friendship. I use to have a handler back in the 80's and she was great. Her fee back then was 50.00 a show plus millage and hotel (depending on how many she was showing and would divide that between us all). I would still pay the entry fee. She would also need to take each new one I had to start showing for a week or two before shows - to allow the dog to get use to her and training her style. And I would pay for that which was just a boarding cost - I forget how much that was. But it was worth every penny since I could not travel every weekend when a show circuit started. It was more cost effective for me to place my dogs with a handler and she also knew which judge would like my type of dog. So finishing was also a lot faster. I do not have a handler now - since I am not an an area that have a handler near me. I thought about asking one that lives about 45 minutes away, but she also shows/raises her her yorkies. And I thought I would do this for fun for myself. Best of luck! T. |

Many kennel clubs have handling classes. The AKC website is a good place to find out if there is a kennel club in your area. Go to a few meetings and you may be able to find someone who would help you get started. The Eukanuba National Championship is going to be on Animal Planet this afternoon. I think it's just highlights not the entire show but you could get an idea how to stack and move your dog. There a some very good books on handling. My favorites are The Winning Edge by George Alston, Secrets of Show Dog Handling by Peter Green and Tricks of The Trade by Pat Hastings. Good luck to you. I have been showing for 30 years and I still love it. It is a great feeling when the judge points to your dog and then hands you that little scrap of blue ribbon. |
