Showing Yorkies Hey my names Aria and I am a newbie to this site. I live in Texas and am looking into showing Yorkies. If you have any good information about how that works, picking out a dog, or just good experience and memories out on the field that would be nice.:) Thanks! |
Hi Aria! Welcome to yorkietalk! I think its awesome you have an interest in showing Yorkies, you came to the right place there are a lot of people on here with a lot of experience. I think your first step should be to go and attend a show. Watch the dogs and the handlers, you might even be able to have a conversation with some Yorkie people. Take your time, and have fun. This will give you an idea of what you are getting involved with. It really is a lot of fun, and for me I have met some really awesome people that have been able to help me. Good luck Aria! |
Hey swan thanks for the advice I really appreciate it! |
You might consider joining your local Kennel Club and any Yorkshire Terrier Breed Club in your area. They offer advice and even classes in how to show. Good luck! |
Thanks yorkiemini, I'll look into it.:) |
Hi Aria, welcome to YorkieTalk. Showing yorkies can be lots of fun and very rewarding. To do it right you need to do a lot of research and be ready to spend lots of money. It takes a huge commitment to grow a show coat on a yorkie. In order to make a yorkie a champion it usually required a lot of traveling to the dog shows and it can get very costly. If you have a very nice representative of the breed you can easily spend 3 to 4 thousand in expenses before they become a champion. Also expect to spend around 3 thousand for a good show quality yorkie. You have to be so careful in choosing your yorkie. Most of the show people I know won't even sell a show quality yorkie to a novice person. If you do find someone that would be willing to sell you a yorkie they usually require you to sign a strict contract. My advise would be for you to attend some shows and get in contact with some members of the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America that live in your area. I wish you the best of luck and please feel free to ask more questions if you have any. |
You've gotten some great advice so far as joining a local club and attending shows. I would definitely recommend attending as many shows as you can, watch the yorkies, and introduce yourself to yorkie exhibitors after they are done showing. Once people see you attending shows, networking, asking questions and learning, there will be some that will be willing to help you and possibly even sell you a dog or give a good recommendation to someone you are interested in buying from. We just had several shows this summer that would have been great to have attended...Dallas and San Antonio were earlier this month. But there will be others this fall. |
How do I know if my Chikubi is ok for show ? |

Next join a local toy breed club or if there is a Yorkie club even better. You can get secondary opinions at those clubs as well as attending akc oe ukc shows to meet the breeders and establish relationships. You also need to look at a show dog as a potential Olympic athlete. Great conditioning. Show training superb nutrition and of course the extensive grooming requirements. You must study the standard and self assess your dog for at least compliance to the standard. This will allow you to ask informed questions of any breeders you meet. |

Cool - thanks. Is good to know - Cuz I am a pet sitter and Someone left him when he was with me. And said he is going to sale him. Since he with me already and he has a lot of problem. Really bad separation anxiety and he wasn't even trainees anything when he was 9months. I don't want he just go to a bad place again. I paid for his everything and bought him. I have his paperwork and stuff now but I don't know how to contact the breeder. I'll try to find if Here has any local toy breed club. I believe his personily won't good to be at a dog show and he is 15months now. But I want to take care of him as a show dog. So I can learn more and get myself ready for show. Thanks a lot |
