Need questions answered about showing yorkies in 4H Hey guys, I recently inherited a Yorkie from my Great Grandmother. She is a 6 year old female and about 11 pounds. I'm planning on showing her at our county fair in Obedience and maybe Showmanship. In obedience I will be showing her at the Pre-Novice B level. I was wondering, we have the groomers give "Sassy" the short cut. Would I be able to show her in the short cut? Thank you! :) |
Look up the rules for competition at your county fair. In AKC or CKC shows, obedience you can have the hair any length you'd like. For conformation the coat must be long, on an adult dog. I'm not sure what kind of competition is "Showmanship" - hopefully there is a local site you can go to to find out the rules. Anyhoo - best of luck and enjoy your day |
Ok, our county 4H follows the AKC rules. So it should be good. Thank you for your help :) |
Also, are we allowed to say voice commands to our dog while showing? |

For long down, you can signal it and say Down. You can repeat Heel command after every stop/sit. Stand for examination you can signal stand as well as say command. for heeling. Lagging and forging are point 1/2 deductions for each lag/forge. But calling up to you or signalling back is at least 3mark deduction, might be worth it if you think on the heel off lead you will lose your dog lol lol. Good luck and most of all Dance with your dog be it conformation or obedience. :D |
Ok, with our lie down, I have to kneel down and touch my finger to the ground and say ''lay down'', is that acceptable? |
I am going to say no. I think you will get points deduction if you do. Try practising now with you standing and just signalling down with slash down of hand. The judge might view your actions as not one signal for down but at least two signals. |
How fun for you, best of luck! |

Sassy also won't pull, but she is normally way behind, I have a Gentle Leader, but it still doesn't help... |

Vary your treat pattern. Does she like toys? If so also reward with a toy. Break up the heeling exercises. Vary the pace, the timing. Try heeling with her on different surfaces. Have her heel beside you when she is up on a low bench, or on the curb. For competition you won't fail if she lags or forges, as long as she comes to your side to sit when you stop. Heeling is by far the most difficult skill for most dogs. Let me know when your competition is I'll be rooting for you and your gal:D |
Oh my you can't compete with a gentle leader. You will have to compete with her on a collar and a lead that is exactly 6 feet. Better start practising now with the lead and a collar. |
Craps just re read your first post. Are you sure it is Novice B? and Not Novice A. I am more familiar with Canadian rules. Novice B are for those competitors who have previously earned a Utility title on their dogs. Please check out the AKC rules found on line at www.akc.org for obedience competitions. |
Haha ok, I wouldn't be competing in the Gentle Leader, no way! In our fairbook Pre-Novice B is for the dog who has been trained. |
Oh, it's PRE-Novice B. I'm teaching her that when I say "lay down", she lays down. Instead of having to touch my finger to the ground. :) |
