New to showing =) So I've done it. I have a newbie to all this and have decided to try my hand at showing. I have a 14 week old pup with excellent bloodlines and while I do not know if she is show quality, I am hoping that the dozens of champions in her lines don't fail me. I have registered with our local kennel club and will be starting conformation classes in the next couple of weeks. I am lucky to live in a part of the country where I have easy access to lots of shows within a 3-4 hour driving span, so I will certainly be doing that! I have lots of questions -- I found a super friendly Yorkie show person's website and have emailed her with some questions, but I feel bad inundating her .. esp since she doesn't even know me! So I've come here looking for some answers. I hope some of you don't mind obliging =) I'll start simply. What is the best way to train my girl how to stand nicely in the bath without sitting/jumping/gnawing on my fingers as demonstrated by the beautiful Yorkie in this video -- Thank you! |
Welcome... Your puppy is only 14 weeks..what you need to do is establish the role of pack leader...be firm and follow through...no need to raise your voice, just speak firm...make good eye contact and stare her down, never divert your eyes first..in dog speak that means you are "second"... I, rarely have to correct my adults...I look at them, they know...but they are adults...puppies are full of ginger and need to express themselves, just be patient...and groom everyday to get them used to it. |

Gemy + YR, thank you for writing back. Those are great ideas! I hadn't thought of the spray nozzle, squeeze bottle and the non-slip mat. I am fortunate that my pup fits perfectly in my kitchen sink. I like that you sing a little song while you bathe her. I think that would be a great idea, especially now while she's learning her name! (It'd be good if I could settle on a name for her! haha) Thank you for your tips. I am traveling to Louisville, KY in the third week of March to a show! Its my first one to attend and I am super excited! I will try to post pictures sometime of my baby girl! =) |
Have fun at your first show, it's really interesting. It can also be a little confusing - what is involved in getting a dog ready for the ring, when the Yorkies are showing, where the rings are, what the judge is looking for, etc. You might post a thread asking if anyone is going to this show in KY and is willing to let you "hang out" with them. :) That way you have someone to give you the "inside track" and you won't miss the Yorkies. Okay good idea! The breeder I've been badgering is showing her dogs all four days of the show and has invited me to meet her, but I will also see who else is going. It would be really nice to meet other people. I think it would also be nice to meet other newbs that are also navigating their way for the first time. Maybe I'll meet a few at the conformation class that starts in a couple weeks. =) |
I was interested and opened up this thread only because some time down the line I would love to get into showing, as well. My schedule now consists of being a mom and running by 7 yr old and teenager to their activities - so my schedule really isn't mine - its what theirs entails - so unfortunately my interests will have to take a back seat right now. I was especially interested in the video. Although both my yorkies sit very well through a bath, I was intrigued to learn about the coloring used. Do all show dogs have their coat colored? |

Rules Applying to Dog Shows: SECTION 8. A dog which is blind, deaf, castrated, spayed, or which has been changed in appearance by artificial means except as specified in the standard for its breed, or a male which does not have two normal testicles normally located in the scrotum, may not compete at any show and will be disqualified except that a castrated male may be entered as Stud Dog in the Stud Dog Class and a spayed bitch may be entered as Brood Bitch in the Brood Bitch Class. It is against AKC rules to color your dog. Unfortunately, it is being done. |

Back to my original post about bath time, I wanted to say that since I've been grooming my girl every day, when we went to take a bath the other day, she was completely calm the entire time and stood for the most part instead of sitting. I must say, it is much each to bath a dog when they are cooperative. LOL :rolleyes: |
