Bow Color History - Fun thread For all you long time Yorkie exhibitors - anyone have approximate dates when bow color changes to red? I heard before it was orange. And the fun stuff what's your guess on what the next show color might be, and I wonder how bow color got changed? |
Back in the early 80s when I first started showing, most people used red solid. Then a few people started to use the red with white pola dots, mostly under 1 year of age. Then we started to see other colors like, Turq. blue and also green was somewhat popular. Now it is mostly red. I was not showing when the orange was more popular. Must have been the 90s. |

It is my understanding that green was what was used during the very early days in GB. Orange today is used when a dog has a bit more red in their gold. |

I have a deep rich orange bow now and use it quite often. |

I can only remember red bows-this was in the late 70's early 80's (in Australia), and you had to make your own! Bows were much simpler then(wasn't everything:)) and hardly any bling. Topknots were much plainer too, at least here, which at that time followed the English style. |
Tourquoise was a big color in the 80's too. I was friends with one lady and her kennel was TNT. It stood for tourquoise and treasures. All of her dogs wore tourquoise bows. Fushia was also a popular color and hot pink in the 80's. |

1st photo - Here is one of my girls when she was a teenager with a hot pink bow in. 2nd photo - Ch. Dot's Top Banana form back in the 80s - on the front cover of book. Here you can see how simple the bows were and no puff to topknot. |

Thanks for posting those gorgeous pics. |
1 Attachment(s) Here is one of my other pups with a red with white poka dot bow. The book in the above post is a great reference for colors of bows that were used. They have quite a few photos in color. I love this book. |

I've used black on boys who have that gorgeous clear gold. I've also used a glittered red, white and blue bow when I've shown on 4th of July weekends. |
I went to a dog show in OKC a few months ago and noticed that all but one or two of the Yorkies all had red bows. I wondered at the time if that was a requirement or not... What sets the standard accepted color? Just fashion of the day? -C |
