Question for exhibitor about their pet
 
Hello!

Do any of you who regularly show yorkie and have passion for breed own any other breed of dog as just pet, or do you devote youself totally to yorkie? Is it bad if exhibitor have other dog as pet as well as retired breeder?

Sorry if this silly question, just curious.

I had a (1) maltese in the old days (80s) and an outside hearding dog we rescued from the pound. Now, only yorkies. Many exhibitors will have another breed. One other breed is fine, but many - no (IMO). One needs to focus on the breed well if one is going to learn how to do right by it. That is a lot of work and research. I can't imagine having to research so many other breeds.

Absolutely. I have would you believe a malti-poo (and no I didn't buy it, I'm an easy touch when people are looking for homes for their dogs). And yorkies that were never shown but, purchased only as a pet. Then of course my retired show dogs are spay/nuetered and kept as pets.

Over the years I have had several non-Yorkies as pets..I think you can own as many dogs as you are able to love, afford and provide attention...

Well, it depends. Some do and some do not. I know if you can only care for so many. I prefer to have my dogs in my home. I do not think I could get rid of my dogs when they get older. They are my bed warmers, my supporters, and they have never let me down. I have gone through a lot with them by my side. But I do know other breeders that pet theirs out when they get older in order to make room for their next champion. It just depends on what you want to do. You have to make that decision yourself. I just knkow you can only care for so many and you have to make sure your pets are spayed/neutered.

I also have a neutered pet yorkie from when the kids were younger and also now my first champion is spayed. It would be way too hard to get rid of them. My fist champion is my head and shoulder warmer. I do not know what I would do without her. We also have a smaller female - too small for show that is working on her therapy title. She is my husband's baby. He takes her everywhere with him, even to Home Depot and she loves it.

Pat said it well too - only keep what you can afford, love and provide attention to. That is the key!

I doi not know anyone that show many breeds. I think they would have difficulty making all the ring times.

I know a couple of Handlers; one in Texas and one in California that breed Maltese and handle yorkies. Ring times can be conflicting, but then they have assistants.

People that show many breeds are known as handlers, they do have assistants that help with the grooming and pinch hit for them when they have conflicting ring times.

Yes for sure keep other dogs / cats/ or birds even as pets. For the pet dogs/cats you need to make sure they are neutered. And in your own way and time communicate that with your fellow peers.
