Conformation class Might as well get things on the road. How many take puppies/adults to conformation class? These can be sponsered by a local kennel club or conformation group. This is a great place for you to watch, ask questions and act like you are at a show. You will go thru all the things that you would at a show. You will practice placing your dog on the table to be examined by a person who will act as a judge. Gives your dog and you a lot of experience on stacking , standing for exam and walking for the judge. Great for socialization skill makeing in that puppy on what is required if them. |
classes Classes are great. I will look into some here since we have moved to a new area. Our Yorkie club used to hold weekly classes..that is where I learned to handle my own dog. Johnny Robinson and Morris Howard (Trivar) I am sure you remember them...anyway they taught the classes. I went to an all breed handling class each winter. |
The Lehigh Valley Club does a nice weekend long event in January that includes beginning handling classes and lots of other informational seminars. We're taking the girl scout troop to the next one. |
I use to go to confirmation classes back in the 80's - the last time I was showing yorkies. Since now returning, I missed the last class but they have a new set starting up soon here in NE Georgia. The all-breed dog club I belong to is hosting it. I plan to go (every Monday 7:30). It is a great way to gove the dog practice time and make sure you are showing correctly - and allows you practice time. I think that it allows you to be more calm showing and that calmness transfers down the lead to the dog. They are so observant. They do so much better when they are in a calmer state. :p T. |
have been to 4 classes now. i'm not going to say things are going great..lol. but have learned some. will keep on keeping on. thats about all i can add here now until i run across a really big question that i may have, and i'm gonna have tons of those...:) |
Mine are a bit away far for me to go. I am doing by the "fly by the seat of my pants" style. LOL |

I went to conformation classes with Gazou and Heidi . The experience was really enjoyable even if in the first classes , I make some mistakes . I didn't gave up and correct them . What is great too is going to dogshows and stay at ringside and observe peoples showing their Yorkies . I learned very much by observing Lorraine Hayes , Laurie Hunter and Betty Anne Durrer when they are in the rings . I am always eager to learn . |
That is the very best way to learn so much..watch, watch, watch...Morris Howard was not above a good hand smack..to the handler, not the dog! LOL I did learn from him, but was a bit leery of him..Johnny is very outgoing and friendly. I took a class with Laurie Loisol (Paddington) 2 days, 8 hours a day. I will try and remember the teacher, but escapes me now..he was a Nazi, I do remember that part...and forgive me if there are any Nazi's on our forum. Laurie and I were scared silly for two days..he screamed in your face, pushed and shoved you around..if you diverted your eyes from him while he was talking, he came over and stuck his finger in your face and yelled...and we paid for this abuse. |
That would drive me crazy if they yelled at me.it and end up hurting you and the dog. They have ears too and feel much more. They are like kids - so observant and don't miss a thing. I met Connie of Pregreso once. I have a photo of her from a show. She was very nice. When I lived in Florida had classes and matches with my yorkie club members: Joyce Watkins (Marcris), Sheby Stevens (Kibets), and others. It was a really nice group and loved our parties. :D I have met Ava Tyree at shows and talked afterwards at her camper. She is very nice too! Watching and if others share training with you - it is great! T. |
Since I missed the last group of classes - I have just been practicing myself witht my babies. They are doing great with alot praise. Infact it was so funning at the match. My hubby was practicing with Easy and he thought she was doing so bad with him. He then came back and told me this and added she always wants to walk on my left side, so when I let her she did much better. I had to laugh. He laughted too when I told him that she is suppose to walk only on the left side, especially when on a lead. It was a priceless moment. :D T. |
yelling trainer Was the trainer that yelled at you George Alston? I am signed up to go to one of his seminars in January. I heard he is tough. he has taken BIS at Westminster though. Ruth |
