I said uneducated pet homes as an example of people that transport dogs without much understanding of safety. I'm not back peddling on it. IMO a show home should be well educated on transportation. I can't imagine a toy, especially a puppy being in a car seat on a freeway. JMHO.
I was stopped by a Cal Highway Patrol Officer, my dog was in the car seat. His words were he highly recommended them over crates. Works for me and my pups are safe. They've learned to travel both ways. As a matter of fact I have a couple that vomit while traveling. Switching them to a car seat stopped the vomiting...... There are more show/pet owners that transport their dogs via a car seat. And as I said, it's better than allowing them loose in the car. |

If car seat has been proven to be safer then I can switch over. |

No matter what we do...it's a crazy world out there. We can operate and travel with friends.....keep on eye on each other....even the best laid plans, all it takes is a second... Hey! I've been in the ring and my dog has slipped out of it's neck piece....and there I was running like fool after it..... |
Quote:
LOL LOl.. I can just see that picture. I too have had acutally the slip collar opened up and I was left with a lead in my hand and my 1 yr old blackie running to hubby at the show ring side... Needless to say we didn't finish in the "money" that day....LMAO |

Gail, I don't really know if there are any studies...I can only go on what the officer went on. I know that some are adamantly against them. I find them very convenient when traveling in town....My dogs can look out and can lay and sleep, they are cushioned and hooked in.... If one is traveling to dog shows and you are transporting more than one dog in a van and equipment....crates stack better......just have to make sure they get plenty of air......I do prefer crates during that time...although, I hate veri-kennels..... |
I will have to get the photo of my daughter's yorkie in a real car seat. Yep - sitting on her bum with the fasterner between her legs like a real baby. She really thinks she is a baby. Shhhh.. do not tell her. She also goes backpacking, hiking, and camping on the Appalacian trail and other trails in area. She has her own backpack and duffle bag she totes on her back up the trails and loves it. At night she goes down in the sleeping bag and goes to sleep. So funny. They were gone for four days a few weeks ago and she made it all the way. She loved it. She has also learned to ride in my daughter's backback on her back and then peeks up over her shoulder. I told you .. she really thinks she is human. |

I have a couple of crates for Razz. Right now we don't need to stack, in fact we can't with our setup stack two crates on top of one another. We kind of do a tee with two 40" crates in car. Razz has a wire crate he rides in car with - like the wire crates I have for the two big ones. He is cinched in in his wire crate between our seats. We are going to purchase a unit that sits on the back of our trunk .. quite simply we need that as the roof rack is not good. Can't get too much in it, and the wind drag is awfull. Camping n stuff we have so much to take with us. |
Quote:
This is so exciting. We go hiking alot. and love it. If Razz can carry his food and water it would be great! |
Right now it's pretty easy, as I don't have any travel companions. But, it Texas I always traveled with my mentor. We take two dogs....but, then there is the equipment for the show site and equipment for the hotel room. And of course our luggage, which consists of one suitcase each (small at that). But, the car had to be packed precisionly, so that things didn't have to be moved around to get equipment for one stop or the other. |
Quote:
But, just because one chooses to use a car seat over a crate doesn't make them undeducated......at least the dog isn't lose in the car......
That's cute Mary LOL. undeducated I said uneducated pet homes as an example of people that transport dogs without much understanding of safety. Gemy, please-please-please get a picture of your daughter's Yorkie in a real baby carseat! That is the cutest thing I have ever heard of and I bet it's really safe too. I actually thought of it but too afraid of what other people would think of me if I did it. Good for her! I am an infant care expert and I've watched crash dummies, on film, in baby carseats, as the automobile rolls over repeatedly and it is amazing how their little bodies and heads are protected. I say I love and protect Priscilla just like she was my human baby but sometimes I feel like a hipocrite when I learn better ways to take care of her and the chances I've taken. |

I'm not a show person, so I must be one of the pet homes that you're referring to, but I'm hardly uneducated. I do put my Yorkies in car seats and they are safe. I understand having to crate them when you're going to shows because normally you would be driving a longer distance to a show using a highway and there should be less stopping and starting while in traffic BUT for us pet homes putting our Yorkies in car seats is more pleasurable and just as safe for them. Putting them in a cage with all of the slowing down, stopping and going again would be jerking them around. In a car seat, they are surrounded by soft foam, securely tethered to a harness, and able to sit, stand or lay down comfortably plus I am able to turn around and check on them. I have been hit from behind while at a stop light and my kids were just fine. I do think that the people who let their dogs sit in their laps while they are driving are uninformed about the safety of their dogs and others. Of course, I know that there are very educated people driving around while talking on their cell phones and I think that is the biggest safety hazard that I've ever seen! |

There may be must of it than I'm aware of. Everyone parks all over the place. THIS SHOULD HAVE READ THERE MAY BE MORE OF IT THAN I'M AWARE OF. EVERYONE PARKS ALL OVER THE PLACE. . It's obvious what I meant about uneducated. We're all here together, same passion. I'm not going to be a dart board on your keyboard b/c you're having a bad day. Nobody called you uneducated. If you choose to be confrontational/ combative you can do this without me This isn't anything to be on the attack about. |
That's cute Mary LOL. undeducated I said uneducated pet homes as an example of people that transport dogs without much understanding of safety. I'm not back peddling on it. IMO a show home should be well educated on transportation. I can't imagine a toy, especially a puppy being in a car seat on a freeway. JMHO This is quoting your post. You said uneducated pet homes - then who were you talking about? Confrontational because someone questioned your comment? Hmmm... BTW - I'm not having a bad day. It's a beautiful, sunny, day here in Las Vegas! :D Try to enjoy yours! |

It's a beautiful, sunny, day here in Las Vegas! Try to enjoy yours! Mary, Are you serious? This is the reason people PM and email but refuse to post. I didn't attack you. I tried to think of a word to use to describe a situation. It was not what I meant, nor was it anything sinful, much less applicable to you, Carol or many others. After I explained it. HERE I AM HAVING TO EXPLAIN MYSELF FURTHER. I said that I've never known anyone that shows to use car seats to transport to shows. HOWEVER MAYBE THERE IS MORE OF IT, I'M NOT AWARE OF BECAUSE I DON'T SEE WHAT EVERYONE DRIVES DOGS IN TO SHOWS. In addition, the comment about being uneducated wasn't an open ended statement as I clarified. I thought that cleared up when I said, uneducated about the safety. I didn't attack you or judge you or any other group of people. No, I said there may be more of it I'm not aware of. People park all over. As a reminder that I do not see inside cars as a show. After that I commented about your typo saying it was cute. It's the first one I've seen of yours and the word is a funny one to mistype. It was/is cute. Essentially, email is without intonation. We can make our point without having to spend hours to type something. This shouldn't be interrogation because someone wants to pick on another person. Many people don't post now because of this behavior. I've said often that my fingers don't type like I think. It takes me a long time to type. Please don't do this. It's a waste of time. I've ALWAYS treated you with respect and I expect the same. There is no reason for you to think I'd be unkind to you. Don't assume I'm being unkind to you. You SHOULD know better. I like you and I KNOW that you do ;);). Don't be moved by my reaction to car seats. I was surprised. But this doesn't mean I'm judging you. If I were to judge, I would never do that publicly. |

" My point in bringing this up was to make you aware of the obvious. Someone that is being unkind to you does not make a warm comment to you after a discussion. I wouldn't be unkind to you then turn around and say your typo was cute. |

Like I said, for me traveling to shows, car seats are not an option, with the number of dogs and equipment needed. But, my dogs love traveling around town in their car seats, they are able to see outside, I can better see them through my rear vision mirror. They are more secure being harnessed in. |
Let's please keep this nice :) I don't think anyone was attacking anyone Elle or Mary or Connie :) What I think happened was the uneducated pet owner and a car seat comment was taken out of context by me I'm guessing and I apolgize if I took it out of context and started anything. I just know that show/pet owners do use car seats :) If I had a car seat and was going to a local show I would probably use it because I do have some that get car sick and Mary informed me that it works in a car seat. I use vari kennels and maybe this is a good topic to see if something will help with dogs and car sickness...wire crates vs. vari kennels vs. car seats to help with car sickness, something to investigate :) Thanks all :) Donna |

Charmer use to get sick in a Veri Kennel. Switched him to a wire crate and it did the trick. CJ would become agitated in a Veri Kennel, switched to a wire crate he at least settles down, in a car seat he travels wonderfully. A couple of others I've had vomitted no matter what I put them in....until I switched to the car seat....no problem anymore. |

Rescue remedy is the cure for motion sickness in the car. |

Mary - I'm surprised that Charmer didn't prefer the car seat like CJ. Whatever makes them happy, right? Wish there would have been more entries here... poor CJ - I bet he misses his Mom. I really hope there's more for the Specialty. |

Most of the time Bonine works and I've used Rescue Remedy and some of my dogs it really doesn't matter what you give them to help. I have a friend that has a havanese and has given all these things too and he still gets sick in the car. I'm going to suggest to her something other than a vari kennel and see if that works. |
