The Smaller Shows Must Survive, NO FLOURISH
 
This is an article I just read in the magazine "SHOWSIGHT The Dog Show Magazine". It was written by Peter Belmont Jr. It is a fascinating and informative article about the survival of the smaller shows.
This is a quote from the Header of the article.

QUOTE "During these uncertain economic times, it is our smaller shows that need support. They must survive! Smaller dog shows are not only the way dog shows started out, they are still in the majority. True, our larger shows are more glamorous (on the surface only, pardon me) and receive greater media attention, but the smaller shows are the sport's lifeblood. I have exhibited and judges at both and I vote for the smaller" END QUOTE

If you get the opportunity, read it! It's a great article......got to love the small shows too! ;)

I could not agree more! I'm constantly encouraging people to go to dog shows in their area.

There's Claremore and Grove in April, I'll def go to these two, and one in Carthage, Mo next month that I might go to. Of course then there is OKC in May....can't wait for that one!

Hey Bonny, do you want to go to the Claremore or even the Grove show with me? Claremore won't be as big as Grove, but is closer.

Is the OKC one the one that actually in Shawnee? Or is Shawnee later in the year...maybe September?

I'd really like to go to the one in Claremore, & it would be great going with someone who actually knows what's going on. :D I would be clueless. :p That would be great - thanks!

OKC is the Okla YT Specialty club's show and is near downtown, I believe. Shawnee must be an all breed show possibly and could be in Sept., IDK.

Claremore will be a good first time dog show for you. It's small enough you won't be overwhelmed but large enough you'll be certain to see some beautiful dogs, same way with the Grove show though.....Reno's breeder will be there.

Hey.....save some $$$, I'm sure you'll find something at a vendors booth you'll just have to have!:D

Ya think? :p Really though - thanks for the warning!

When is the show in Grove? Mary (Mardelin) told me how to find the schedule awhile back but I need to figure it out again. If I enjoy the Claremore show (which I'm sure I will), I may try to go to the one in Grove, too.

Grove starts on a Thurs with the first kennel club, but goes through Sun, as it's three different clubs hosting the shows. I'll probably be going each day, so if you want to go on Sat. or Sun. just let me know.

OK YT is in May

Shawnee is in Sept.....

I love Claremore and Grove use to be my favorite show....but, I'm told the town has changed and doesn't have that small town atmosphere anymore.

Are you talking about Grove, Mary? It's still very small town, just busier than it used to be....lots of retired folks are moving there anymore.

yeah! I understand they knocked down that cute resturant down off the bluff, over looking the water and the Mexican resturant is gone.......

The motel we use to stay at and it wasn't by any means the Ritz.....will not let females use the wash clothes to wash their faces.

LOLOL....No...it definitely is not the Ritz....OMG....you're kidding about the wash clothes.....a ladies face is probably the least offensive thing those wash clothes have touched:eek:

yep! So, Trish now stays somewhere else, I think at those cabins on the water.

What made Grove your favorite show? Was it the town or was it something about the show? If it's really good I definitely don't want to miss it.

I'm not even going to ask about the motel and the washcloths.

IDK the answer for certain Bonny, but would think this show could be a 5pt major. Plus for a bigger show, Grove is ( or used to be ) a small, quaint little town on the shores of Grand Lake......a bigger show w/o all the hustle and bustle of big cities.

The scenery and the small town atmosphere, several antique shops. There is also a dinner cruise you can take. The drive up Hwy 75 from Dallas was great. There's a huge Peanut Brittle Store just on the OK boarder that I love stopping at just to stock up on Peanut Brittle. Eastern OK is beautiful. It always made for a low key, relaxing (if you can believe that for a dog show). The show building is held in an old K-Mart building......nothing fancy or big. Claremore is nice. Several exhibitors from MO drive down for that one. That and a couple of close friends live in Claremore. So, we get to exhibit and socialize together.

Are you going to make it to any of these in OK this year? I hate to admit it but I've never been to Grove. This might be the perfect time for me to go.

I agree - eastern Oklahoma is very beautiful. If you drove up from Dallas, then you passed through my hometown of McAlester on Hwy 69. Did you ever get a chance to stop at one the Italian restaurants in Krebs?

Yes, do pass through McAlester. Never stopped to eat at any resturants. To tell you the truth.....usually driving up we are on a time line and driving back, well we're usually tired and just want to get home. At the most we usually just stop for fast food. Anyway most of the time the weather doesn't allow for stopping and leaving the dogs in the car......

As you know; Texas/Oklahoma weather is either too hot or too cold.....or there are extreme thunder storms.......I think we've stopped at a resturant, maybe twice. Once going to the Oklahoma City Classic and another time coming home from another Oklahoma show.
