Looking for a mentor in the SJ/Phila area I'm ready to start absorbing as much info as possible about showing and am looking for a mentor in this process to get my dog started in a few small shows. Anyone either local or not that would be willing to be a mentor via the internet/phone/or in person would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks, Catherine |

Mentoring requires someone close to you......some one that lead you every step of the way. Internet or phone will not do it. |

Mary, are you allowed to take a dog to the NYC shows if it's not being shown? I would love to take Gidget! :) To the OP - why don't you go to the Boardwalk KC show in Wildwood in February? It's a small show, but it's interesting and I think you might enjoy it. I'll be there. :) |

You do need to find someone close to you that has been in the breed for many many years, someone who is well established with their own line. Go to as many shows as you can and you will meet the Yorkie breeeder/exhibitors in your area. Take it nice and slow. Do not be in a hurry, enjoy getting to know everyone and once they see you are indeed serious about learning, someone will take you under their wing. Also, there are many wonderful show breeders that you can learn things from, we are always learning from each other, and there is always something new to learn no matter how many years you have been in the breed. Look on the YTCA site to see who is in your area. Yorkshire Terrier Club of America |
Question about the show in NYC in February... Do breeders bring puppies/young adults for sale? I am searching for a new furbaby! Would love to avoid shipping :D |

Evaluation Can I bring him to the show? I thought most shows prevented outside dogs? Who do you suggest or how do I go about getting him evaluated? |

* Just not sold this way. To get a puppy from a great reputable breeder there is a long process and interview to go through to make sure the pups get the best homes. There is a lot of responsibility here. * Also not a great idea to bring little ones to shows - good way to get sick. Not taking that risk. Best thing to do is to get to know the breeders/exhibitors at the show and let them get to know you. |

Top Knot...I'll be sure to get some posted tomorrow as they are on my other computer. We actually have two. And while my little Belle is a tiny 4lb ball of kisses, she's not show material. We are working on her dog aggression. She seems to only like my Bowser. Other than being a truly handsome Yorkie (and just like parents of human kids I'm sure you get that biassed opinion all the time) Bowser has always been a very prim and proper prima donna. Even his trainer has said he doesn't walk or run but rather prances with a pert tail and ears and loves to be groomed. He is almost a year and a half...is he too old to get started? Mardelin, if I bring him will he be allowed in the building or will I have to keep him in the hotel or car and ask them to come to me? I'd really like to bring him inside if possible and because we have friends in the area we'd most likely stay with them instead of in the hotel. |
