Holding Tail Down I am watching a pup for show, and she is not wanting to hold her tail up. What can I do to encourage this? |
I have had this problem myself. I learned how to fix this problem on the Ceaser Milan show. On his show the dog was afraid of everything. His tail was always held down. He explained the you need to keep the tail up. So the dog will have attitude with his tail up. I was at a the yorkie specialty and a friend of mine could not get her yorkies tail up. Some of my friends tried to help her. I decided to try too. I put her tail up rub it gently and started to walk with her. Each time I stopped I did the same thing. Within a few minutes her tail stayed up. My friend took her in the ring and did the samething. It worked. I do use this at handling class too if my yorkie is alittle nervous. It really makes them feel more comfortable, happy and Attitude. Hope this helps you. |

I'm having the same problem with my Libby. I did notice at handling classes this week that it is starting to go up! Yeah! I hope it continues and stays there! |
I have notice that some yorkies will hold their tail up nicely when moving but when they come back to the judge and stop their tail will go down. Does that count off a lot? I know baiting and getting them excited with a toy will sometimes help them keep the tail up when they are just standing still. |

When I rub the dogs tail I say," were's your tail, " so it has a name to what I want him to do. I practice this saying and get him excited, so his tail goes up. Now some of my yorkies who have had this problem don't anymore. They put it up on my command.;) |

When you mentioned Cesar Milan I could not help but chuckle when I recalled an episode where someone had a larger dog that would not hold his tail up while gaiting. Cesar had the guy tie a rope to the dogs tail and walk the dog with his tail being held up with a rope. It worked, before long the dog was relaxed and moving with his tail up. |

Doesn't tail set and tail length also effect how well a dog carries it's tail? I have seen some yorkies that just don't seem to like to hold their tail up. I have one pup, almost 8 months old, that her tail looks like it is vibrating she wags it so much, her dad's tail does the same thing. Really cute. |
Has anyone heard of SATZ training? It's similar to clicker training... SATZ stands for Saft Alternative Teaching Zone..... |

There are some downloading training instructions on clicker training......the key is making sure you condition the puppy first. |

Theresa, I have never heard of the SATZ training. Have you tried it? How does it compare to the clicker training? |
