Blue hair on head? My breeder made no claims to my pup being show quality, in fact she breeds for temperament etc. However I know his grandparents were Champs and so was his mom. I'm just curious into the whole thing because I know it can take quite some time to find a fault in these guys. My actual question (lol) is are you disqualified for having any blue hair on the face? Wookie already looks like he has a small spot of blue hair coming out of the top of his head. Also his Dad had blue hair on his head. |
How old is he? Can you show a photo of what he looks like, so we are sure what you are taking about. If he is young, it is just his head turning silver before his gold comes in. What are the names of his grandparents that are champions? Best of luck with him? Congratulations!! :D |
It really depends. I think you are referring to "thumbprints" located right on the forehead and on the sides of the head toward the ears. Usually most puppies have this and they clear within the first year however some take longer and others never clear. With the new standard, an adult dog *can* be disqualified for thumbprints. Sometimes thumbprints are an indication of coat texture--maybe more experienced breeders can comment on this. From my experience I have seen many soft coated dogs retain their thumbprints indefinitely. Are you thinking of getting into showing? As a side note, beware of anyone saying they "breed for temperament" as an excuse for lack of breed conformation (unless they have a LONG line of obedience titled dogs in Utility). At dog shows, a big part of judging the breed is not only the dogs appearance but how well its temperament also conforms. Yorkies are terriers...they are feisty, little busy-bodies who love to dig, chase bugs and run-a-muck. It still amazes me to this day they have the patience to be groomed :) |
I was thinking of the thumbprint too, but that is usually a term we use for older yorkies - 1 year and up - when refering to the hair above the nose having that black streak and you see when you put the topknot up. I think her pup is a young pup still - I am using her avaitar photo as to age of pup. |

Oh no my breeder didn't say she bred for temperament! That was just an assumption I was making lol It says in her contract that she doesn't claim my pup to be show quality is all hehe Sorry, poor choice of words on my part. Wookie is only 9 weeks that's why I was surprised he had blue hair already. Right now I'm curious to get into the showing, but I'm not getting my hopes up that my little guy is up to par. I'd just like to learn what I should be looking for just in case it just so happens he would be okay to show :) I've been practicing stacking him, he actually stays perfectly still. I'll take pics tomorrow! Topknot: I'm unsure of his grandparents name, I have to get his pedigree. I will find out though! His dads' name is KayDee's Axel Rose and the mom was...I think Bebe's Taffy. |

Me too! The paper should be here any day, I received the AKC email stuff a few days ago. Oh yes, he is free fed and gets wet food twice daily and NutriStat twice daily as well. His breeder gave me a whole handout on hypoglycemia as well as his supplements and food. He plays pretty hard and sleeps a lot. I'm going to take pictures after he wakes up from his premorning nap :p |

Thanks for sharing. I would not worry about the blue on his head. I thought you were asking about silver, but it is blue you are asking about. All pups are normally born black and tan and then change as they grow older. He should not have an all gold or tan colored head now at his young age. It will take about a year to change over. You should work on taping his ears to get them to stand though if you want his ears to satand later. There are some great web sites out there that will give you directions for taping up the ears. To get the size down on your photos, you need to put them in paint and then resize them by clicking on image then open sketch/skew and reduce the image in percentage horzontal and vertical % - use same in each box. Then save and name. Then you will be able to down load the photos to YT posts. I hope this helps. |
Thank you topknot! His ears perk up more everyday and he's only 9 weeks so I'm waiting till he's 12 weeks before taping. I'm shaving them with a #40 right now. |
Their ears will go up and down while teething. I always believe, with yorkies, best to tape and not wait till they are older. It might cause his ears harder to get up in the long run. If his ear leather is thicker it also reduces the chance of his ears standing. I have had yorkies since 1979 and I always tape the ears and keep them trim if they go down. |
Aw, I just hate to do it to him at such a young age...I have a feeling he'll just rip it off lol But I'll give it a go and see how it does. How long should they be taped for? |
