Growing a Show Coat?
 
Hi. How do I grow a show coat? Ball is 3.5 months old his coat is somewhat wavy but starting to straighten out. I don't want to keep him crated just to preservehis coat....soooo...what do I do? iI've been told use a pure boar bristle brsh and pure stainless comb so I'm looking for those. Do I wrap.and if so how? How often to bathe? He gets pretty dirty. Would like to Try showing with him...just for fun. Yes I know it is a lot of work....but I really need detailed..written instructions. I am visually impaired so I just can't grab a print book or look at a picture. Please give al the advice you can. I don't want the "puppy cuts" the "schnauzer cuts" r the oter "short cute trims" that the local groomers want me to give him. Coat is one of the easons I fell i love with Yorkies fifteen years ago..one of the reasons I've had several. Ball is my baby and now that I have the time I'd like tolearn to do it correctly. Thanks for any help.

Wow, there is a lot to growing a coat and you do not have to crate them to grow one if the dog can grow a coat. First and foremost for a yorkie to be able to grow a coat they must have the quality or genes to grow one. For that, the best kind of coat that grows best is a real silky coat. It sounds like your baby may have a cotton or wooly coat, since you mentioned it is now getting wavy. Those have a tendency to have a lot of coat, but mats a lot. So your main goal will have to be to stop it from matting. He is young right now and so you have a lot of time to learn this information.

As Topknot says; there's a lot to growing a show coat. Genetics, texture, nutrition and cleanliness. No, you don't have to have them in a crate, but a lot of extra care goes into it. As far as wrapping a cotton or wooly coat, I wouldn't start wrapping your pup at this point, let it be a pup. Also, on cotton coats it's best to wrap with plastic.

Like other have said, growing coat it a lot of work but if your yorkie has a proper silky coat it is easier to achieve. You need to start with a good quality shampoo and conditioner. It is hard for us to give detailed instructions on how to care for your baby's coat without us knowing what kind of coat he has. Here is a good website that gives some good information about coat care and it describes the different types of coats.

I read in one of your earlier post that your pup was 5.8 lbs at 3 months so it is most likely you pup will be too big to show in conformation but he would probably do great in obedience so you might want to check that out. You might find someone in your area that gives classes in obedience. Best of luck to you.

If I had to keep my boys in a crate all the time in order to grow their coats I would quit. I do wrap and rewrap and wash and rewrap and wrap again. I spend lots of time wrapping. But you have to keep it clean and in oil to preserve the coats condition. If you have the time to dedicate to the process then you can find info and products that help. You may also want a wrapping jacket. Boys will urinate on their coats when they are really long so it is very important to keep it up and away. If you contact your local Yorkshire Terrier Club in your area they can be helpful in getting you started. I found my club and they have been wonderful. I am now a member of The Yorkshire Terrier Club of Greater Houston Area. The member have helped me find good Vets and Vet dentist, everything I needed to get started in show business.

One thing that was mentioned before, your boy may be on the larger size. The standard is under 7 lbs.
