Confirmation Classes I just brought Sasha (20weeks old) to her first Confirmation Class sponsored by the Acadiana Kennel Club. At first, she was very intimidated by all of the other dogs. They were mostly bigger. She was the last in line on her first go around. At first she kinda tugged on the lead not wanting to follow the other dogs. She was terrified of the table. She did not like the lady touching her. After 40 minutes of training, she picked up her tail and pranced like she owned the place. She sort of adjusted to having a dog behind her will going around the ring. She stood still on the table. We still have to work on strangers touching her. I also need to study the procedure to "stack" a Yorkie. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. |
That is great that she did so well her first time out. Will you be showing her at AKC shows. The Lake Charles and Beaumont shows will be close for you. Have you been to an dog show before? It always helps to attend one. Here is a link with some dog show videos on it. You can click on the preview and watch a good bit of the video without ordering it. I think it is a good learning tool watching the professionals at work. It takes a few minutes for the video to start once you click on preview. National Show Dog Video Professionals How long will you be going to classes? The more you can get her out to different places the better she will do. It is normal for them to be scared at first. Be sure to keep us posted on how she is doing. |
Thank you so much for the advice. The video was very helpful. I ordered her a grooming table to help her being put and handled on a table. (I was using my makeup counter) I've been having freinds and family members hold her and put their hands all over her and she's doing better, but still not too trusting. I think she may be too spoiled after me. She always wants to jump from their arms into mine. I just turn away until she calms down. Thanks again. |
It also helps if you can set up your grooming table in front of a mirror. Then you can watch in the mirror as you stack the dog and you will be seeing what the judge sees. Also, try placing her on lots of different surfaces at different heights and do a very quick stack with lots of praise or a treat. Pretty soon she will not think anything of being stacked no matter what the place. I have a friend who used to take her yorkie to the post office and ask people to give her dog a treat and pat its body. That way they get used to strangers, and both men and women touching them. But always with a little reward from the stranger. Pretty soon you'll be in the ring and your baby will race up to the judge to get her treat. Judges like that. :) |
Thank you so much for that reply. Very helpful information. I will try all of the different things that you have suggested. I can't wait for my grooming table to come in. |
