Handling 101? Ok, so my goal is to one breed for show/ and show a yorkie. I have a great breeder who I am learning a lot from. I am in no hurry to do this and won't be able to do much hands on experience until 2010. But in the mean time, could you suggest some great ways to look for classes, seminars or readings on learning to handle/show dogs? What is YOUR story? How did YOU start? |
I am in a smilar situation as you,( I want to show first then breed) so I can't give you any actual information from experience. AKC does have listings for seminars for various and sundry things such as handling and what to look for in Yorkies in the standard. Unfortunately, they are never local for me and usually occur during the weekdays local or not, when I am working my real job. Does the CKC not have any information on lists of seminars or classes for the local clubs that might be near you? |
I had scanned over the CKC website. But I will do so again. Thanks for reminding me. Keep me posted as to how things unfold for you! Kate |
The best way to learn is going to several dogshows and observe . |
I will try to remember to come in here and report my progress if there is any! Things will unfold very slowly for me too though! No show prospect yet! I am very lucky as there is a professional dog trainer in our area and she not only does obedience and agility, she also helps people with handling things like stacking and moving around the ring. I started takeing lessons a few times, but when I saw that my dog was not show worthy, I stoped. Now I think I will start again just to get some hands on learning as that is how I learn best, by doing. I need to learn a lot more, now that I think of it!! As for going to shows to watch, this sounds like a good suggestion. However, for me there are only 2 big all breed conformation shows in my state every year,(where I know I can see Yorkies). I hear there are smaller specific breed shows, but I have yet to find a so called Yorky match. I am only currently interested in Yorkies, it is hard for me to want to go see a "Hound" show and watch how they stack and move in the ring. Perhaps I should though...... Maybe you live close enough to your breeder and maybe she has enough time to teach you some show handling? Do you have a dog you could practice with? |
Ya, I live about 25 minutes from my breeder and I am constant fixture (perhaps annoyance) around her home ;). She is great and I can't say enough wonderful things about her. In fact, if you have a moment, check out her site: Blue Majesty Yorkies I will try to keep you posted on my "progress"--if I learn anything anytime soon. |
