is it a crime to keep a yorkies hair really short looking into owning a yorkie, but I would prefer their coat to stay 'puppy short' is this considered a 'crime' in the yorkie world? Or just really unnatural? |
my puppy is only 4 months old & im planning to have his hair puppy short through out his life. it really doesnt matter, some people like it long & some dont, its really up to you. |
Some Yorkies have Cottony hair that matts easily and some have Silky hair that is easier to comb. Puppy cuts are just easier for some people to care for. I take mine to a groomer and have him clipped to about 2 inches every 8 weeks over the winter. If he seems hot over the summer maybe shorter and every 6 weeks. I want them to leave his hair on top longer so I can put elastics and bows in them. Baron Loves being dressed up... :aimeeyork |

You will see all different cuts here on everyone's pups. Some are long, other puppy cuts and some even get shaved. Most are some form of puppy cut and even that takes a lot of work to keep looking nice. |
Most people I know prefer the puppy cut. |
If I am not showing them, I cut them down. I put them in a modified schnouser cut. Its much easier on me and the dogs love it too! |
There are some ADORABLE Puppy Cuts!!! Just check out some of the members albums here on YT...... but you may have to get a few sweaters! ;) |
We keep ours in a puppy cut year-round. With four of them, it makes life easier. :) Pam |
I think puppy cuts are adorable, but.... LOL, I love your question. It reminds me of a visit I had to PetValu a couple of years back. Dh, Ginger (my girl yorkie) and I were shopping. At that point in time I would take her to work with me, to the pet store every week for something new, to dog club to play with her friends, to agility class (she loves it). You get the picture, one spoiled little pup.:D Anyway, we're walking around Pet Value and people are oohing and awing over her, because she is a cute friendly thing. A man walked up and asked if he could pet her. Bent down, patted her on the head and said "I used to breed yorkies, and it is abuse to cut their hair short like this". Then he got up and walked away.:eek::eek: I was soooo stunned!!! Anyway, NORMAL people don't expect every yorkie owner to maintain a long flowing show coat...just stay away from that guy.:yelrotflm:yelrotflm:yelrotflm Good luck in your yorkie quest! |
I keep Lucy and Rebel fairly short all year round. Lucy tends to mat easily and I think it's better for her. I keep the hair long on top of her head for her bows, and keep her "beard" a little longer, but rounded so that she doesn't keep her face wet when she drinks. I keep Reb in a puppy cut most of the time. He's a little stinker and gets into EVERYTHING. I can't tell you how many times he's come running up to me with stuff hung in his hair and it makes life easier all way round to keep 'em short. It's a matter of choice to me. When I first got 'em, all I could think about was that long, flowing coat that you see in pictures. Reality set in quickly when I saw how hard it is to keep them that way. |
I have one long and one short. The one that is long is now suffering with allergies so her backside is long and beautiful and her middle is short because she has scratched the hair until it breaks. I will tell you it is a pain unless you brush all the time for long hair. My short one, the groomer does a short cocker cut on Roscoe. It gives him an apron around the bottom but keeps him short on top of body. She shaves the ear tops trims face and feet and he looks great. |
Yep, it's a crime - a felony, I believe - punishable by 30 days of long hair yorkie grooming :D Whatever works for you is the way to keep your yorkie - and if that is cut down, then keep them that way.:) |

Some People do think that way. I think you should Keep YOUR dog the way YOU want it. I keep Brownie Short He has allergies & is a typical boy that likes to get dirty i would spend more time grooming him then letting him play. |
