Dry skin problem My newest little girl has dry skin. Her hair is nice and shiny but her skin is dry. I feed her Innova EVO, she drinks distilled water, I add Summerwinds Health-E-Coat to food, was using Summerwinds shampoo/conditioner and she gets bathed every 3-4 days. I changed her shampoo/conditioner to John Paul Oatmeal formula. I have only used it once so far so no change yet. I don't know what else could be drying her skin or what else I can try. I have Summerwinds leave in conditioner/oil but is she too young for it (4 mon)? I am also having a problem with tons of tearing. Her face always seems to be wet but it wasn't when she got here. Could it be the cleaning products I use to mop?? (pinesol and clorox) I can't think of anything else that could be causing this. Myra |
Connor and Denali both have dry, sensitive skin. I tried Summerwinds on them and they flaked like crazy. Turns out they just can't handle petroleum based products! Watch your ingredients carefully, petroleum has such a large molecular structure that it can easily clog the pores causing flaking and brittle. I would suppliment with omega 3 oils like salmon oil and stay away from oils that you apply to the coat and skin for now. |
my mentor suggested rubbing pure coconut oil in after the bath (not much). If you can deal with a little greasy look till it soaks in it really has made a difference in my emmas skin plus if you buy extra virgin cocnut oil she/he will smell delicous. |
maybe you are bathing her too much. i would try a new supplement. find a 100% all natural and gentle shampoo/conditioner. my guy had dry skin issues. we now use cain and able shampoo/conditioner and use lidoderm in his kibbles. |
I agree that it could be the frequency of the bathing but it also could be the nutritional input for the puppy. Skin and coat are directly related to the food/intake and the quality of the intake. My little Gracie has terrible skin problems - almost on the verge of allergies. I made the switch to a different food and her skin and coat have been beautiful! I also use the shampoo from the same source. Just let me know if you have any more questions! |
Try Flax Seed Oil and Missing Link Plus... Most Oils will clog and cause flaking.....What I've had the best luck with and no flaking is Mayonaise...yep.....shampoo, with water and then rinse with 1 part vinegar to 10 parts water, Condition, rinse and work Mayonaise in, then dry......I have tried everything from Emu oil, Primrose Oil and Almond Oil.....all caused flaking.....I've been using Mayonaise for about 6 months, no dry flaky skin.....To remove completely use a clarifying shampoo with enough baking powder added to make a paste..... |
Lilly has horrid allergies and her dry skin used to be ridiculous. I tried so many different shampoos & finally bought the TropiClean OxyMed Oatmeal shampoo & the rinse. It's awesome, her skin is so soft and doesn't get as dry at all. You have to leave it on for several minutes but it's WONDERFUL! |
