Stacking? How do I teach a dog how to "stack"? |
I start my puppies "play/free stacking" when they are around 10 to 12 weeks old. These early lessons will come in handy when you "stack" then on the lead. I make it a game and a competition between the siblings using something really yummy or a favorite toy. I also start them "stacking" on the table when I groom them. That way they are not afraid of the tall table and are very confortable on the table as adults. As they get a little older, I will place the front feet at the edge of the table(grooming or coffee table will work) and then will place the rear.(always keep a hand on the puppy so as not to fall off the table) Hope this helps!! |
Ok well my guy is a year old and i was blissfully unaware of that information when he was a puppy so what do I do? |
Does he play with a favorite toy or love something especially yummy? I would start by making it a game. Wave that something special in front of him and a little above his head. Kind of tease him with it. He will eventually "stack" up. Then let him have it. I would also practice with him on a table just like I said, by placing his front feet on the edge and then placing his rear. He will eventually "get it". Squeaky toys are great for getting that stance and look as well. Thats why the photographer has a squeaky toy when taking pictures of the winner at the shows. It gets the dogs attention. |
Makes sense I will try that tonight! |
a question for show people- are some dogs just BORN knowing how to do this? I swear when Layla stands and looks at me... she stacks herself! I always say- if she ddin't have a curly coat- we could show her... she does it all herself! |

i too believe that some have a natural stance...MeiLing seems to but once anyone hand goes to touch her...she rolls over for belly rub...i think we spoiled her too much that she may not have any more hope in the show world...although she has the attitude and personality...i know that her being so submissive and always wanted to get belly rubs had hurt her...unless there is a way to undo this behavior...is so please i would like to know..i think she has potential like her sire and so forth...hehe |
OK..I ride the short bus...what is stacking??? |
