What is the reason Yorkies tails are docked? I was talking with someone the other day about tail docking and how they clip some dogs ears and I told the woman how my yorkies tail was docked and I am just wondering what if any reason that all began? Was it just for looks or is there some logical reason why they started docking yorkies tails? |
i think that ages ago, terriers and hunting dogs etc, had their tail docked to help them work (eg not have their tail get caught on something while chasing after something). now it's more tradition, i think. in the uk, mostly they don't dock tails anymore |
The docking of dogs tails is a practice which has been carried out for centuries in order to avoid tail damage, for hygiene and other reasons. European countries are not allowing tail docking.....however, it's been reported that since this has stopped, broken tails are on the upswing |
At one time in England a docked tail identified the dog as a working dog and the owner was not taxed on a working dog. Since they want to tax us all on our dogs I would say that the docked tail is no longer needed. |
I wonder what a yorkie would look like with a tail |

I thought the tails were docked because they were used as ratters so they could go in the smaller holes and not have the tail in the way LOL...easier to be ratters....LOL |

We have members here on YT from Europe with yorkie's tail not docked, they are very attractive with their full tails. I still prefer docked tails for yorkies...but honestly when looking at the pictures of Chelsey, Chanel, Alfie and Lottie, I never notice their tails, overall they are adorable! |
Here are some pictures of one of our girls in the AKC ring with her full tail. She actually did very well, the judges adored her head, commented on her silky coat and how well muscled she is. One judge even said to us as soon as she was put on the table for her exam, that we could relax because she did not mind the tail one bit. She showed great but always gave up on that last go around but managed one Reserve. UKC CH Butterfly of Padawis - Kiki There is a video on our 2008 UKC Show News page too of Kiki winning her championship in one weekend! Scroll down to the July shows to see it! JaLa Yorkshire Terriers in the Ring - 2008 UKC Show News I used to really not like a yorkie with a full tail, they looked odd to me and just very different. After living with two I adore them and would love to see our standard worded to allow either or, which would be very nice for our friends overseas who would like to send their dogs here to compete too! |

I'm with you, I love the Padawi's dogs. I have a New Deal male and his tail bothered me at first but now I really like it. I didn't realize how much expression it would add to his personality. I still like the very compact look of the docked tail, and it's hard to relate how important that profile is when judging movement and overall balance. I do think the docked tail is more in keeping with the original purpose of the breed. |
