Showing How do you go about showing...I have heard its very exspansive. |
I would go to some shows to watch first and check out a breed club in your area. Matches are a great way to practice for a show. Yes, showing is expensive! It usually cost about 2,000 or more to finish a dog. This is not a sure thing, just from my experience. It depends on your dog and how close they are to the standard. Some dogs and never finish. It also depends on where you are at and how far you must drive to show, if handling yourself as well as how many of your family go with you or even if you go with frineds - then you can split the cost of room and gas. It also depends on how much experience you have showing and if you have a handler. Also what dogs are going up against your dog and what judges are judging. There is a lot involved. T. |

Here is a great website with lots of information about showing and dog show schedules. Lacy's Place in Cyberspace - Dog Show Information I would start by attending a dog show and if you decide it is something you want to do then you will need start your search for a show dog. If you already have a dog that you feel is show quality then I would recommend you contact a show breeder or handler and get your dog evaluated. It required a lot of time and effort to grow a proper show coat on a Yorkie. If you have any specific questions we would be glad to help. |
Yes the first place to start is at the shows, we watched ringside for about 5 years before we ever stepped foot into the ring ourselves. We learned so much by just watching and talking with breeder/owner/handlers. It is very expensive, we spend thousands every year on entry fees alone, not to mention travel, hotels, grooming supplies, show supplies (seems there is always something else to buy), clothes for showing...etc...it does get pricey but so do many hobbies and sports. This is pretty much what I spend my fun money on...but I so enjoy it. We are showing this weekend...going to be in the 90's and humid...so I just spent $50 on fans and the batteries for them for the yorkies. Gotta keep them cool. Then they have their cooling beds too. :) Gotta spoil them where ever you go. |

Showing is expensive, and now wih gas proces it is even worse. First, after the initial investment of grooming supplies, leads, wraps, tack box, grooming table, show clothes for yourself, then you have the entry fees which run 24 to 26 per day per dog, then the cost of travel, and parking, if you stay in a hotel, that cost, meals, food for your animals and who can resist visiting the vendors at a show, and there is always something there that was just made for you little guy/gal, oh and that new treat that you just must try. But, it is also fun and rewarding for you and your baby, and the feeling of joy when you do win is really great, but there are going to be far more losses than there are wins, but if you have fun, there is always another show later down the road. |

Yes, it is expensive. What I mentioned before was only for entry fees and hotel, but this does not include gas, food, buying from vendors, grooming supplies, set up fee (grooming/ring side table, bows, wraps, bands, etc..), parking, or if you have a camper. So yes - it is very expensive. I show to prove the quality of my dogs and also it is fun for our family (when we go ourselves). It gets us out of the house and the family together. Now, I do have to admit we may have a few arguments a long the way. We also get to see places we would not have seen and it allows us to be together without the TV, computers, or texting. We do bond as a family and oh, what stories we have to tell sometimes. T. |
Wow ladies thanks for the flood of information....I am really interested in doing this. |
I have a question! What is higher BOW or BOS? For example, bitch got BOB (from Best of Variety Competition class) BOS got a dog (let say it was enough dogs to make 3point) BOW got bitch (but there are only enough bitches for 1poit) So is BOW getting 3 points (matching dogs points) or getting just one point? And vice versa. |
I wish someone would do a yearly breakdown of show cost We have only just started showing but I think I spend about 500 up on a 4 day show so after a short time we bought the RV .. Thousands of Dollars then the carts and groom tables and blah I think the start up for showing is the roughest once you have your show basics together its gas food and fees I think the worst expence is the vendors that call to me like QVC I am levitated into there booth ever freaking day !!! |
