"Cobby" is a word I have always heard people use to describe a Yorkie body. Better words may be substantial or thick. They should not be racy like a Saluki or Afghan Hound but solid like a working Terrier. Cobby also sounds like the dog would be short but a correct Yorkshire Terrier should be square. He should be tall as he is long and long as he is tall. You will know when you pick up one of these dogs. They have a well built, well muscled body. Tami's Conner comes to mind as dog with a correct body type. Donna - considering who bred Radar and the success he is having, I am sure he has the correct body type. I would love to get my hands on him someday. |

When I think of cobby, it's shorter with more substance...not so much of an elegant dog but more terrier (as a yorkie should be LOL). But personally I like an elegant yorkie but has to be square as in what was described above. I have both but prefer Radar's build more so than a shorter stocker dog. Thank you for the compliment on Radar :) He's holding his own in the show world right now LOL...I just love his breeders! |
When I think of "cobby" I think of my Persian cats as that word is used to describe them in their standard. They are like little pekingese dogs...thick, broad cats. I guess I just don't ever picture yorkies being "cobby" since I'm used to Persian cats being described as "cobby". I like yorkies that have some leg to them...I don't like the look of a short squatty or thick yorkie. I have a pet yorkie that is short and thick and he's adorable but not at all elegant looking. And then I have a pet that is tall, long, and lean but she's longer than she is tall so she doesn't look completely proportionate (but she is a very strong and sturdy little dog). But I love the look of a finer-boned, taller (yet square in height and leg) dog. I just think the ones with some leg look so elegant. |

I will use my dog Deuce as a example. He is a cute little guy. Everything is in the right places and his color is correct. He meets the standard but his body is slight and he probably can't do the job Yorkies were bred to do. Now, I think about Tami's dog Conner. He also meets the standard. Everything is in the right place and his color is correct. The difference is when you pick up both boys. Conner's body is thicker and he is much heavier. In fact, he is heavier than he looks. Conner could go out and do the job he was bred to do. |
I have always had trouble thinking of a yorkie as "cobby" because this is a term used to describe the shih tzu breed over and over again, they do not have near the length of neck or leg that I like on a yorkie. But I do like a yorkie with good spring of ribs! |
