Would like to possible show in the future? Hello, I was just curious if anyone has any good websites about showing yorkies? (Or any good beginner websites) Also good sites on breeding. I use to show bunnies and did pretty good at it. Once I graduate I would like to look into showing and breeding. Thank you |
My recommendation would be to start by attending several dog shows. You can go to http://infodog.com/ to find dog shows in your area. I have a friend that buys all kinds of videos on dog showing from http://www.sweetyblue.com/ Once you have decided if you really want to show then take your time, do your research and then find you a good show prospect. If there is a show breeder in your area maybe you can go visit them and perhaps they will be willing to mentor you. Don't be afraid to ask questions. You will learn a lot here on YT and there are a number of very experienced show breeders on YT. You can also just google 'dog showing tips' and find a lot of websites with information. Keep in mind, even though dog showing and breeding is very exciting and rewarding, it is also very costly. I hope that you can achieve all that you set your goals for. |
I would find a kennel club in your area, they can help you alot. there are confirmation classes you can go to and watch others that are training their dogs for show. Also try the www.ytca.org and see what Yorkie Show breeders are in your area. Here is a link to AKC a beginners to show link. http://www.akc.org/events/conformati...ed_showing.cfm If you know what type of Yorkie you like, I would talk with and get to know those breeders and form a relationship with them. The sweetyblue videos are wonderful. The two videos on grooming will be very helpful the one on handling will not teach you to show a dog. It is more "tweaking" the performance of a more experenced handler. You will need more basic infomation on handling in the beginning. A great beginners book on handling is a book called Show Me. There is a Yahoo group started by the author of this book that discusses what is taught in the book. The group welcomes novice exhibitors and is very willing to help. You can not decide it is time to buy a show prospect and find someone to sell you a quality dog the next day, the next week or even the next month. You have to build a relationship with a reputable breeder before they will trust you with one of their puppies. This is important - there are people in the world that will sell you a pet quality dog as a show prospect. Calling it a show dog doesn't make it a show dog. Do your homework. Buy from someone has breed and finished their dogs and have sold dogs to others that have finished. The YTCA breeders list is a good place to start. Good luck to you! |
