Any tips or information
 
On AKC Junior Organization?

My son just sent for his Junior Showman Ship Request form and he is super excited. He was able to see a show first hand and got very interested in doing shows. I have been looking at information and got a few show books for him to read but most are for adults showing not a kid. He is 14. How different is Junior handling from the adult showing their dogs? He has done more research in this than I have but I am trying to learn more on this. We want to support him as we think he will do well and eventually be an adult handler some day. Hes so excited:D Any advice would be nice.Thank you!

Gosh, I wish I could help you. I am excited for your son too!!! Maybe you could get in contact with a local kennel club. Infodog has lists of shows in every state, maybe there is one soon in your area. Also go to AKC.org. I wish I would have known about dog shows when I has a child. I would love to be a handler now, but, being older, I need the health insurance my job offers me. I did work for two handlers a few years ago. Its alot of work!!

We have looked at the AKC web site, they have good information on it but it really doesn't say much a bout the differences between the Junior showing to the adults showing. Like you earn points and your dog can become a champion when you are an adult, does Junior's showing their dogs earn point too and their dog can eventually get to be a champion? Or do juniors just show to gain experience only:confused: I am a bit confused with this, I know about adult showing, just not familiar with Junior showing. He doesnt care if he get's point he wants the experience of showing because he really wants to get into dog shows. He has tried talking me into it but I am a shy person and I just do not see me doing this at all, My son is very outgoing and also a bit competitive too. He has a friend that's father has tried his hand at showing German Sheperds and that is what got my son interested.

I am pretty sure they judge more on his skills to handle the dog than they do on actually judging the dog itself

Also a suggestion go to the local shows and find a handler that needs an assistant and learn as much as he can from a handler. I know handlers are always looking for assistants in the summer. Jr. handler's show dogs and earn point for themselves. It's all about judging the handler and how he presents a dog in jr handling. If he gets enough points he can earn a trip to Westminster I think. It takes a lot of work.
