Here is a "Dear Editor" Letter I foung.
 

Dear Editor,

Although I have never seen a puppy mill I have heard the puppy mill "hype" for quite some time now. I have also on occasion read news stories about mills that have been raided by law enforcement and dogs rescued from miserable conditions. I gained additional insight into this problem after watching a nationally televised expose. I am still haunted by graphic footage of dogs living I unbelievable conditions producing puppies for retail pet stores. Cramped in small cages their entire lives, many with obvious health problems and unforgivable neglect. The shame and enormity of this problem has inspired me to investigate further and to write this letter.

Puppy mills are essentially "factory farms" that mass-produce puppies, usually sold at wholesale prices, to retail pet stores. These commercial breeders and the mills that they operate are licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture. The USDA supports the commercial pet production and distribution industry, which it evidently views as an alternate agri-industry. Many states and local governments do not have regulations that specifically address commercial pet production and distribution. Apparently, when discoveries of deplorable conditions are made in mills or while animals are being shipped, few and often inadequate cruelty and neglect laws provide minimal protection to the animals.

There must be something that I can do, but what? Forget strengthening laws intended to protect animals since they are not always vigorously enforced. I cannot imagine the thought of an animal held its entire life in a tiny cage only to breed litter after litter till death. Living on wire floors so the excrement can pass through. Completely devoid of any loving human contact.

Now I have a solution, something I can do to make a difference. It is very clear what I must do to help stop the endless cycle of suffering and death.

I will not buy another item from a pet store that sells living animals. I will only buy my pet supplies from a pet store that does not sell puppies and kittens. And I will tell the store selling living animals why I am not patronizing their store. I will promote the purchasing of puppies from caring, ethical breeders only. I will take my personal crusade to my friends, family and neighbors to take profit from the pet stores whose motives are obviously greed. I may not accomplish much more than personal gratification for doing my part to stop this cycle of suffering, but at least it’s a start.

I would like warn other readers about dangers to be aware of when getting their next dog. Many people spend hundreds of dollars to buy a healthy looking puppy only to find out soon after that he is seriously ill and requires costly veterinary care to save his life. With some basic steps, families can protect themselves, their wallets, and the puppies all at the same time.

Puppy mills are breeding facilities that produce purebred puppies in large numbers and sell them to unsuspecting consumers. They are inhumane, designed to maximize profits, and commonly disregard the physical, social, and emotional health of the dogs in their facilities. Because of these conditions, puppy mill puppies are more likely to have physical and behavioral problems than dogs from good sources.

Puppy mills lurk behind the beautiful web sites, ads in the local newspaper, even behind the doors of a nearby pet store. The best way to stop puppy mills from continuing their abuse is for consumers to stop buying the puppies they breed. Many people think they are “rescuing” a puppy by buying one—don’t be fooled, you’re just creating space for another puppy to be sold. Never buy a dog unless you can see for yourself where he or she was born, how the parents are kept, and what condition all the dogs are in.

If you have your heart set on purchasing a purebred dog, it should be from a reputable breeder. A printable checklist of good breeder characteristics is available on the web site, www.StopPuppyMills.com, and more information about finding your next pet can be found on The Humane Society of the United States’ web site, www.hsus.org.

By far, the best place to get your next pet is the local animal shelter. Many people are surprised to learn that nationwide, one out of every four dogs in shelters are purebred. Most of these shelter animals have already been spayed or neutered, and have received all their vaccinations and veterinary checkups. Shelters also screen animals for adoption so that they can make a great match between animals and their new families. Purebred rescue groups are another excellent resource for finding a dog and you can find links at www.petfinder.org and www.pets911.com.

People who love dogs need to help stop them from being mistreated by making sure they aren’t supporting a puppy mill.

Hey, when I started researching I came across a couple of sites made by other animal lovers that they were getting petitions and letters together to send to OPRAH. From what I could tell it is in 2004, and one of the guys putting it together had an insider at OPRAH, but I don't remember OPRAH doing a show on puppymills.

It looks as though they had no success. They gave OPRAH's mailing address and email address, and they gave their own address so people could either send their emails or letters directly to OPRAH, or they could send it to guys that started it. They collected all the letters and sent it to OPRAH all together, but I can't tell if anything happened.

Has anyone else come across this?

I haven't heard anything. But I guess it will be a good idea to give a try once again. I guess if we are persistent we will prevail. We can even contact Montel. Even thou if Oprah does a show about this it will cause more awareness I think.

I didn't even think about Montel, I don't watch his show, but I will write him a letter...and The View.

i wonder if they got enough letters if they would do a show on it??

As most of you know, this is a my crusade in life......to shut down these mills. Sometimes I get so tired emotionally though. Right now, I'm trying to talk my husband into rescuing one more dog from a kill shelter in Robinson, IL. He is saying no, but the dogs have until Saturday to live. I will keep trying. Most people you talk to about puppy mills come back with some lame line like "well, there are a lot of abused children too and we can't stop that either." I just want to scream "This is an abuse we CAN stop if people will only stop buying ANYTHING from a store that sells puppies!!!!" They look at you like you have three noses or something. I'll get my emotional strength back and keep fighting. Keep the Faith. Elizabeth
