adopting a dog What can one expect when one pays to adopt a dog? What is the new owner paying for? Vet check? Shots? Dental cleaning? What does the money go to beside the rescue? |
I do not speak for all rescue but I can tell you the one where I volunteer charges $275.00 for adoption, with that you get the following: 1. UTD on shots 2. Heartworm tested (and treated if found positive) 3. Spay or Neuter 4. Guarantee that at the time of adoption the dog is healthy or being treated for health issues (if being treated you are sent home with meds) 5. The dogs complete medical history from the time it steps foot into our rescue to the time you sign the adoption papers. The bonus is you are getting a well loved, socialized dog who spend everyday around people who love them, feed them and want nothing but the best for them. Oh and one less homeless dog on the streets. Now if you were to buy a dog from another source the first three items on my list would cost you at least $275.00 and items 4 and 5 depends on whom you buy from. |
adopting a dog That's kind of what I thought should be covered. Don't you think if the dog was microchipped previously, the rescue group or their vet should do a little homework on the dog before putting it up for adoption? |
The rescue I volunteer with does, if the dog is microchipped and if the owner registered their information they are always notified. The problem is so many people buy dogs from a pet shop or have a dog chipped but never register their information. Also they move, or change their contact information and there is no way to contact them. |
adopting a dog Dont mean to sound redundant, but if the microchip company is called, do they call the owner on the chip, or do you call the owner of the dog? |

If this is a dog that ended up in Rescue as a stray, I know the group I volunteer with, we have all stray's scanned for a chip to try and find the owner if possible. This is not always possible. There can be many reasons for that. The owner didn't send in the paper's to register when they got the chip, so there may be chip in the dog but no way knowing who ownes it. I know my Willow that I adopted almost 2 yrs ago was a release from the breeder to the Rescue Group I adopted her from. She was Micro Chipped by that breeder, who didn't have paper work for her. So she was Chipped by the Rescue Group. So my Miss Willow has two chips in her. |
adopting a dog Well it sounds like you are a reputable rescue group. Thanks for the info. |
The same with the rescue I volunteer with, every attempt it made to reunite the dog with it's owner. In fact with our rescue the dog is scanned three times once being at animal control since that is where we pull dogs (we do not accept dogs "found" dogs unless they go through animal control it's a law here). Did you have a probem with a rescue? |
