Looking for advice Hi, I have acquired a Yorkie and need help. His name is George and he was born in December 2006. His owner passed away very suddenly three weeks ago. I am unable to keep him despite absolutely falling in love with him. I have a dog I rescued 5 years ago as a puppy and the two are not fond of each other and I am terrified my dog might hurt him. I am keeping the two apart as best I can. I researched his breeder- have all the paperwork- but have learned on your site she may not be as reputable as her website claims. I am hesitant to reach out to her. I am a practicing psychologist and will be able to take George with me to work during the day until I can find him a loving forever home. Any advice as to how I should proceed would be most welcome. Thank you. |
I am sorry you can't keep George. I have a George that was born in June of 2006. If you don't feel the 2 dogs can co-exist you are doing the best for George by letting him go. If you plan on rehoming George why are you worried about his breeder? I guess maybe someone would want to know his medical history but his vet should have his records. There are plenty of people here who have a ton of knowledge. Best of luck to you and sweet George! |
Hi- the paperwork I have from the breeder requests she be notified if something should ever happen. I researched her name and found some less than comforting opinions. I have contacted his vet- plan to keep him there and with the same groomer as I'm certain he's confused enough, until I find the right home. He is the sweetest little boy- totally house trained, no aggressive behavior, eats well, minimal barking. He's 4 pounds. I'm hoping I find someone on this site. He's a real prize. |
I should add George is up to date medically, neutered and very good with children and adults. |
George sounds like a perfect pup. I hope you have great luck finding him a wonderful new home with someone familiar with yorkies. Thankfully he's neutered already, which is awesome! My only advice is to thoroughly check out whoever he goes to and be sure to get a vet reference from the vet they use too. |
Thank you, I will. He really is. It's a shame his owner passed away. I'm sure things will work out for him- he is a real sweetheart. Figured this site was the perfect place to start. |
Do you think, with time, the two dog would get along? I am sure you know besr. Maybe you could contact a yorkie rescue, they are very good at finding new homes. I am sure there are many people (like me) who would love to give him s home. I just live too far away... |

Is it possible you could just get a behaviorist to help the two dogs get along? |

Thank you for caring soo much for a precious little boy that is in a "fork in his road of life". I think you deserve a whole bunch of "atta girl's" for even bothering to try to do what a breeder has set forth in her papers to the original owner, as well as compassionate enough to care emotionally what happens to this baby boy! YOU REALLY ARE TO BE COMMENDED FOR YOUR EFFORTS!! There are several rescue ladies on this forum that can certainly give you assistance getting this baby rehomed. I wish, just based on the care and concern you have already shown toward this pup, it would work out for you.....you dont think your other boy will ever accept him? I certainly wouldnt want to even suggest taking a chance on trying to get a 4# pup to be accepted by a larger pup that feels this new guy is nothing more than an interloper on his territory! Someone on here will be able to help with this baby....your instinct to come here for assistance was right on! |
My little dog was once attacked by a bigger dog. It is very scary. I have seen how some dogs react to these little guys. Even some very sweet well trained dogs see a fluffy little dog as something to stomp on or to grab and shake. I guess it is some sort of inborn instinct they have. It certainly is not worth taking a chance that one of your dogs might get too playful with the little guy. I'm so glad you are taking the time to find the perfect home for him. |

Thank you all for the advice. He really is a sweetie but my Stella has her nose so out of joint. Maybe she will relax a bit over time but on the other hand I know he would make a wonderful pet for someone. I've learned his owner paid $2995.00 for him (just located the bill of sale). Was this high? I've never purchased a dog before- always have rescued. |

I have no idea if he is show or breeder quality. I just know he is awfully sweet and cute. I've been reading a lot about this breed over the last week- I've learned demand for them spiked after the celebrities started which sadly has caused high numbers of toy breeds at rescues and shelters once the novelty wears off. Very disheartening to say the least. |

I would definitely consider speaking with them ... they can help find a good home for George! :) |
Yes, demand for tiny dogs has been huge and created a huge market that puppy mills are taking advantage of. I'm sure this little guy must be a doll. Since a show breeder would most likely sell their best stock only to someone experienced in the show dog world this little guy was probably priced so high because of his size. I hope he finds a home with no small children or other dangerous situations. This breed can be very feisty and unknowing of how small they really are. My little girl seems to think she is a German Shepherd at times. |
Hi My name is Kerri and I am with Yorkies Inc Yorkies Inc. Placement Service If you need help finding a home for George please let me know I am sure we can help. We require an extensive application, vet references and home visits for anyone looking to adopt from us. You can read more about Yorkies Inc on our site. Just wanted to let you know we are here if you need help. Kerri |
Hi Kerri- Thank you for reaching out to me. I've been meaning to contact you- I was given your name by another member yesterday. I visited your site yesterday evening- what a special group of people you are!!! I'm really between a rock and a hard place. George is an absolute prize- so loving, cute and trusting despite everything he has been through. He is just over 4 pounds and my Stella, who is another love, is 55 pounds. I'm just so afraid he might get hurt- I don't have any experience with toy breeds- I considered Stella small until I met George!!! She is super tolerant and recently seems to be taking to him- I'm just not sure it's the right thing to do. I'm struggling with the "what ifs". I also feel an obligation to his former owner to do the "right" thing- not sure what that is exactly. What do you think would be best for him? He is already so attached to us and we to him. I'd hate to have him move again but on the other hand I'll never forgive myself if Stella hurt him- which would be only because of size and play. There has been no aggression by either one, Stella has been an only child and seemed, until the last day or so to be beside herself. I wish I had a crystal ball.... |
HI Amy I can only Imagine the stressful decision you have to make and I think its wonderful you took the time to read up on Yorkies and come to this site. I know Kerri and can assure you that placing him with yorkiesinc would be your best decision should you decide to part with him. The " happytails" on their website will show you just how much effort goes into placing surrendered pups! They are truly a bunch of amazing people and put so much effort into finding the " perfect" home, perhaps one with a little guy his size to be his friend ;).:thumbup: |
Hi there, Thank you so much for taking the little fellow into your life. If you look around the site, you will see many members have large dogs along with our little babies and they do just fine. I think it would be worth a try and see how he nests with your family... seems like it was meant to be he found your home :) |
Wow, you are an angel for taking George in. I'm glad you have decided that it would be best to find him another home. You just don't know what could happen with a large dog and a yorkie as small as George. I am also with a rescue, Yorkie Haven Rescue... and I recommend you speak with the people at Yorkies Inc. He would be in the best of hands and would find a forever home. Good luck. You are doing a great thing for George :D |

Hi everyone- here is an update.. George and Stella are getting on famously. They sleeep on the couch together and have started to play just a bit. Stella dives on the floor with her fannie up in the air (tail wagging like crazy) and George sniffs her face and then runs laps around her, sometimes as many as 25 times. Still watching them like a hawk but all seems to be going well. George also started working with me- he did so well!!! Helped one person I treat smile for the first time in almost a year!!!:):):):) |
