My number one rule of thumb in adoptions is a vet check prior to any conversations with people. I want to know if they have had a good vet history, including yearly exams, heartworm testing and preventatives, dentals as needed. I also ask if the vet has suggested any testing and/or treatments that were or were not followed. I want to have a good idea about what kind of pet owners they are. I do not just ask the vet's office if they know the people...I have a list of questions that I ask. Also, the first question I ask is what dogs that office has seen...and I compare it to the ones the applicant claimed to have. If the vet check is good, then I go to the next step. | Thanks Linda! I was hoping you would chime in! That is first on my list, a vet reference. ;) I might PM you if I need some advice, thank you so much for your offer. I have done rescues many times before, but something about this girl is just...different. She has been through so much and as many have said, her eyes just tell a story. If you could have seen her the day I got her, stuck in that tiny crate shaking and matted to the skin, her backbone was so prominent and she had no food or water in there. I have no idea when she had eaten last or if they even cared. I don't even think they gave me their real names, I wouldn't either if I was keeping a dog in that condition! She has made a 180 turnaround in just the few short weeks I have had her, and now comes the hard part...finding her the best place! Thanks again. |
