Yorkie(?) was dropped off at my house....
 

Last night someone I know dropped an extremely off-standard Yorkie at my house. This is McKenzie's' story.... For the last several years I always noticed 3 doggies in an outside kennel even in the dead of winter.....two white matted small dogs and one I thought was a Doxie who always sat on top of a dog house in the pen. The people who owned that house bought a farm so they could 'raise' dogs. McKenzie was one of their breeder dogs....the one I thought was a Doxie....who originally come from this man's girlfriend in Missouri. Anyone want to hazard a guess as to what she came from? She had been bred for five years but wasn't getting pregnant anymore, so the breeder decided to get rid of her. He gave her to the people who were renting his in-town house. They have small children who scared McKenzie to death. She's afraid of humans anyway, but children petrify her. The current owners decided that it just wasn't fair to McKenzie to force her to live with children, although, the owners say that she has come a long way from the time they got her. Can't imagine what she must have been like because she is a timid 10 lbs. of bones. She is sooooo thin. Very, very long body and super short legs. Looks like there might be some Doxie in her but considering what puppy millers do, who knows. She may be an actual Yorkie like the breeder said. Spine and ribs are so prominent. I'm wondering if it is because she has bad teeth and needs a dental. She also is not spayed which I don't quite understand why the current owners didn't tend to. I bathed McKenzie this evening because she smelled so bad. It appears to have set her back in her fear.:( She loves to be around my dogs but now she just wants to hide. Her skin is so flaky and dry and her hair very brittle. Could possibly be because she is not eating. I went and bought some canned Science Diet that she is on and she gobbled it up. I know that Science Diet isn't a good food, but right now I do not want to change her diet. Already suspicious that the canned it giving her gas. UGH! I have contacted 3 rescues but have not heard back from them. I believe that it generally takes rescues a few days to report back so I'm trying to not get too impatient. I'm not sure what to do about the spay and dental. I've had some horrendous vet bills lately with Chipper. Think I dropped around $500 last week. Any thoughts on what is the proper thing to do? Besides....do I need to let her gain weight before I spay her if it comes to that? I am so worried that no one will want to adopt her. She is not a pretty Yorkie. She also has the tip of one ear missing. The current owner said that they were told that another dog had bit it off. I just feel like I can't give McKenzie enough attention with having 5 other doggies. I am so sad.:( Appreciate any advice. Thanks. ~Joanne~

I'm sorry you are going through so much now; I know you have been going through a lot with Chipper, and felt like you had no other choice but to temporary rescue this dog. We have lots of experienced people here in rescue, and I hope they can give you some tips on where to start. My guess is the dog needs spaying and teeth done before placement, and it would be great if that could be done all at once. I agree with you about not wanting to change the diet, but a gradual change could be done after a week at you home. If she's not experiencing any diarrhea, you can do ¼ new food and ¾ old food, and up it a little each day, if there is no diarrhea. Please post a picture of this little girl, I think someone will fall in love with her eyes, she may not be a beauty on the outside, but we have people here who can see the inside.

We have lots of great rescue people here and I hope some will step forward and offer you some advice on how to proceed.

I don't think your little rescue will have difficulty finding a forever home, there are plenty of elderly people that just want a dog to love and be responsible for.

4 doggiemamma, I have sent this to Linda and Cindy, they always have such great ideas. Bless you for keeping her until she finds a place to call home. Have you spoken with your vet. He or she may have someone wanting a Yorkie. Check with all the surrounding Rescues. When you find one post it and I am sure you will get feedback to make sure it is a reputable rescue. You have to understand, I just do not think that McKenzie can go to a forever home without some professional help. She is beyond traumatized. The only thing I am thankful for is that she is not a biter. I have rescues but none have been in such dire straits as this one. McKenzie will stay with me until I am sure that she is safe and going to learn how to be a happy little doggie. I am shedding tears just thinking of the terror in her eyes. Oh, man. Little update on McKenzie
 

She's now been here two days and I've seen improvement.....small steps that I am tickled with. First, I am changing her canned Science Diet to Whole Earth Farms. The label looks good but if someone has some insight please feel free to inform me. McKenzie is learning to go outside with my other dogs without me carrying her. She won't come down from the upstairs by herself and she jumps off the patio avoiding the steps. McKenzie has started to run back and forth across the penned in area with her tail up. One time I saw her do some hopping like a happy dog would do. She will go up the patio steps and has begun to follow me up the stairs when I go to my dh's office. Today McKenzie actually come into the office and laid down on a doggie bed for awhile. She does get very nervous, though, when my Pommies decide it is time to play and they do a lot of growling. Once, today, she acted like she wanted to play with Snowboy which was good for my heart.:) She has started to stand at the end of the kitchen area with my other dogs as I fix their food which has really become a trip since only two are on the same food. I am feeding McKenzie three times per day. She loves her food, especially the new one. To take care of the rest of my doggies' teeth I brush C.E. tartar tooth paste and spray with Petzlife. I decided to spay a bit in McKenzie's mouth just to start with some sort of touch there. I was shocked to see that she doesn't have any back teeth.:( The former owner called today. Asked her if she knew that....and, no, she didn't.:(:(:( I also asked for any vaccination records, heartguard/flea med. records. She apparently has some because she said she would drop them off either today or tomorrow. I want to start all the medical stuff with McKenzie but I want records first. Is that unreasonable or should I just go for it? McKenzie is still very traumatized when a human wants to touch her but she will allow us to walk by her even though she goes into a crouch position. I have learned that when we are outside I do not look directly at her. That seems to really freak her out. I have not heard from any rescues other than LadyJane who called me but they are a TX rescue group. She offered some very helpful advice. I do thank her. McKenzie will be staying with me until I find a rescue that will take her and see to her needs in a very loving way. If it takes until she is ready for adoption, then so be it. But a rescue will have to handle her adoption so that I know she will be forever safe. ~Joanne~

It took my yorkie two weeks to get used to my maltese. I'm sure she will come around just fine. A little grooming and I'm sure she will look as adorable as any yorkie. I would like a face to go with the story.

Joanne, you sound like you are doing everything right. Remember dogs live in the moment. I bet within 2 weeks Mckenzie is going to be great. I saw one of Ceasar episodes about a dog that was rescued from an animal experimental facility. With lots of walk and socializing around people the dog snapped out of his state. You can do this and maybe take her on walks with the others of course. Keep posting and please post some pictures.

This is a really great article about little ones like McKenzie that need that extra TLC. There are all kinds of really good suggestions on how to deal with a lot of issues that you are being faced with in rehabbing her.

Wow....thanks for the link. Very informative. Will bookmark it so I can refer back to it. McKenzie is a stool eater. She has accidents as I mentioned before and then it's hard to catch. Outside, I just say, 'no, McKenzie' and go clean it up. Will begin the leash technique. Any input is appreciated. Up until now I have only been touching McKenzie when I have to carry her downstairs to go outside or eat. She is terrified. Poor baby! ~Joanne~

awwww .....seeing that kind of fear makes you just want to cry - what a good person you are for helping her. I'm always amazed at the hearts here -

I hope you find every day getting better with McKenzie - it sounds like you're just the kind of person this little dog may need right now to relax and enjoy being a dog (like you said)....It really makes you wonder what really happened to her doesn't it ? Why do people get pets only to mistreat them ? There's no end to it is there ?

Former owner dropped off records that she had. McKenzie is microchipped and I do now have the number. She has rabies. Here are the other records. Does anyone know what these are? Panacue, Ivomec, Danacure, 5 in 1 shot, and then she was sprayed for mites and lice in Feb. Awwww, poor baby. How terrifying.:(:(:( Her anal glands were also expressed in Feb. Her ears were cleaned but I don't see anything about being treated for ear mites. I will be doing that. I also noticed a bit of blood in her stool this morning. Will be taking a fecal in. Any other thoughts? Appreciated everything that has been said here and PMed to me. ~Joanne~

Panacure (I believe is how it is spelled) is a de-wormer. Jack had that. I don't know about the rest of them though.

Poor little thing, I'm so glad you got some records; this will give the vet something to go on. What a challenge, God Bless you for doing this Joanne! You are really becoming such an expert!!! I wouldn't know enough to take a fecal in!

Yep, spelled it wrong. The last one she had was in Jan. 2010. Considering how messed up she is, which indicates to me that the breeder was evil, I'm not sure I believe what is written down. I have been checking her BM for worms and I haven't see any so far, but might not mean anything. Thanks.

I have been e-mailing lots of rescues but haven't received any responses other than LadyJane from Yorkie Haven Rescue which is two states away from KS. Remembered last night that there was a rescue in Hutchinson, KS called Bless the Beasts. I had seen Yorkies listed under their name on Petfinder. Shot an e-mail to them and had an answer by noon today. After school I packed McKenzie up and took her to her new temporary home. This rescue is very passionate about what they do. Right now they are somewhat overwhelmed because of some mill busts, but were still willing to take the time for McKenzie. They will be keeping in touch with me as McKenzie is put through the medical paces that are necessary. It was SO difficult to let her go. When she was with me I knew exactly how she was doing and the progress she was making. I knew that she was safe. Now I have put that in another persons hands. The rescuer that took McKenzie is quite concerned that she stopped getting pregnant at such a young age. There will be extra testing done to find out the reason. I did leave a donation in hopes that it would soften the blow of having another dog on their hands.....the least I could do, and should do it more often. Thanks once again. ~Joanne~

Oh Joanne, this is so wonderful, I'm so glad you were able to find a rescue that could help. I know you were becoming more attached daily, but you have so many special needs dogs now. God bless you for being a foster mother for this little girl, and at least she knows that there are some humans that will be kind to her.

Bless the Beast rescue organization let me know that McKenzie made it through her spay with flying colors and was adopted even before they could put her on Petfinder. Was told that McKenzie is in a very loving, patient home and is making great strides in becoming a normal, happy Yorkie girl. I am very pleased. ~Joanne~

I'm just now seeing this thread and, Joanne... you're truly the angel I always thought you were. I have tears thinking of the wonderful outcome for this sweet baby. Some of her issues were similar to some of Bailey's when I first got him. :( God bless you for being the caring lady that you are.

:aimeeyorkI rescued 3 yorkies about 4 months ago when they arrived they were very afraid of people and terrified children because the people that had her had 3 little girls that are between the ages of 4 and 10 that would swing them around and run with them in there arms. The were under wieght and missing patches of hair.:aimeeyork Since they have been here you cannot even tell they were ever around rowdy kids they have become very friendly and lovable and I also have kids and nieces and nephew that are always here. After a little while of her seeing that you are not going to hurt her she will come around and she will feel the love you have for her. As for the flaky skin they also had that and a bad smell i used kids tear free shampoo that you can pick up at any dollar general it also helps with tangling in there long hair. As for her teeth she will need to see a vet for cleaning but until you are able to get her in for dental treatment then get her chewy bones and milk bones you might half to try a variety of them before you find the right one that see likes but that will help to get some of the tarter off.:aimeeyork I hope that she gives you the most enjoyment and love of every dog that you have as my 3 have.
