Received rescue Yorkie today She is supposed to be about 5 yrs, she is real boney, Got her 4 hrs ago, and she hasn't gone potty, she keeps going around and circles and I keep taking her out, I hold her and she will stand and not relax. Any suggestions most welcome Thanks in advance Pamela |
New Rescue went potty while I was typing message, She is still pacing. Pamela |
She's probably just feeling your place out. I brought Sasha home just a couple weeks ago and she did the same thing with the pacing, although she had no problem going potty. Make sure you give her nutri-cal twice a day at least for the first week, have you tried feeding her? Try to hold her a lot as well, to let her know that she's safe. |
Rescue Yorkie What is the nutri cal for? I hold her and she just stands there. The rescue said she was spay, look at the paper when I got home she was done 4 days ago. Cooked her a scrambled eggs and some can dog food as the paper also said she had 4 front teeth removed that I did not know. So now I am guessing she is not potty trained oh boy, Pamela |
nutri cal helps maintain sugar level....if she is not eating i would give it to her so that her sugar level will not drop causing Hypoglycemia....some dogs when they are in an unfamiliar place will not eat...just watch out for that. |
If she's not eating her dog food I would try to boil her some chicken with rice and carrots and try to feed her that. Try to stay away from wet food as it can cause their teeth to rot. Please keep us posted, and post some pics of her! I think she'll be OK, she just has to get used to her surroundings, and you never know what she's been through in her life. |
If I were guessing, I'd say the poor little thing has spent her entire life in a wire cage. She is terrified of everything! Your are a very special person for taking her in. My rescued yorkie wouldn't eat for 2 days. Then I offered her some scramble eggs. She gobbled it up. She doesn't have many teeth. So I gradually added wellness soft can food. Another important thing I did was hold her "alot". I'd talk softly to her, rock her, & even sang to her, all the while petting & stroking her. You have to earn her trust & you will. Just have to be patient. She didn't get this way over night. Mine would circle (spin) around whenever she went to potty. Always spinning to the left. By nature, dogs will not potty in same area where they eat. Living in a wire cage, they are forced to go against nature causing stress, hinse the circling. Anyway, it'll all work out, just be patient. I have never regetted getting my little girl. Don't know how to add a thread. megansmoma had posted a thread on 10-4-09 titled Rehabbing a puppymill rescue. Verrry good info. I learned alot from it. Might try doing a search or maybe someone here can add it to this listing. Sorry this is so long. |
She is five years old and the likelihood of her having blood sugar problems is slim. I would not worry about that. But, just in case, if you see her getting a bit confused and weak looking then she might need something. You could put some Karo syrup in water for her; but, as I said, I doubt that will happen. I also would not be cooking eggs or anything else for her! She needs to start with good eating habits! Put her on a schedule of feeding, twice/day. I much prefer giving them kibble. Even if she had extractions she can eat that....you can soften it a bit with warm water. Put the food down for 15 minutes...if she does not eat it, pick it up. She will eat when she is hungry and ready! She just needs to be left to explore your home and get comfortable. If you have a crate, put a blanket in there and show it to her, so she has a safe place to retreat to should she choose to do so. Let her come to you....on her terms. Let her come to realize on her own that she is safe. All pups when placed in a new home go through some changes....they are bewildered. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 days before they will eat. That is perfectly normal! Leave fresh water for her at all times. Did you get this girl from a rescue or a shelter? Sounds like they did not tell you very much. :( I am so sorry because people should have someone to turn to when they adopt.....we always follow up and make sure pups are adjusting well. As for housetraining...you will not know about that for a few days. She is scared and nothing will be normal for her. She might have been pad trained...you could put a piddle pad down in case she knows how to use that. And, you can take her outside every couple of hours. Praise her whenever she piddles outside. Don't make an issue if she goes inside. Just pick her up and take her out...eventually with positive reinforcement she will get it. I feel so sad that she is underweight and just got spayed. I don't understand how someone could adopt her out like that. Feel free to PM me if you need anything. I am sure in a few days all will be much calmer! Congrats on your new family member. :) What is her name? |
Sure would like an update. Thanks |
Would love an update, too. I bet she is such a blessing. Have you taken any pictures? |
