just no cats! 1 Attachment(s) As sad as I am, we must start looking to place our guy in a new home. Rusty is an energetic, bright, people lover, who is most definitely an alpha male. He was an expert at pottie training and continues to be perfect at that. The sole problem is that I own two declawed house cats and he just can't cannot resist chasing them at every opportunity. I've tried to my wits end to stop the behavior, but I'm believing now that it may be a lost cause with his personality type. It is now causing enough stress if our family that I believe Rusty would be happier with a family without cats. Rusty has also been raised with a lab who he loves to pal around with but also can be tormenting at times primarily because of the differences in their age and activity levels. We live in the Seattle area and hope that someone out there could enjoy all his other wonderful qualities. He even smiles when you come home! |
1st of all welcome to YT now on with your problem,i have 4 cats and a yorkie, yes she does chase them but as the time goes on and a very small water pistel that i squirt her with when she chases them she is now slowly accepting that they live here too, she is nearly 8 months so still only young by the time shes a adult she should be fine. try not to have to give him away things will get better just keep trying and if he no'es that each time he chases a cat he gets wet he will stop, another thing people try and is suposed to work is filling a small tin with stones and shake it each time he goes near the cats they hate that noise and when he doesnt chase them give him a treat for being a goodboy. hope you can work this out keep us informed wendy and rosie :rose: :yorkiesar |
Our yorkie chases our cat too. sometimes I think she likes it and tries to get him to chase her on purpose. To make the adjustment easier for her, since we had her first, we put up a baby gate at the door to the office and to our bedroom. These two places are her safe haven. Her food and litter are in the office and she spends most of the day in there and then she sleeps in the bedroom with us at night. This way she can get away from our little hethan which seems to really help everyone sanity. I really feel there is a way for all your animals to coexist. they may never become friends and love on each other, but they will learn to get along it will just take time. |
Is it possible that they are all playing together? Dogs ARE known to chase other animals. Lots of members have cats and yorkies and after a while they have gotten used to each other. I wouldn't recommend getting rid of him just because he chases the cats. That's just something most dogs do, and I hope you had taken this into consideration before getting him. He's just doing what feels fun and natural to him. :( :thumbdown |
brownie chases our cats all the time then they chase him back LMAO its pretty funny since my cats is bigger than all the dogs good luck |
My yorkies will chase our cats too. We have gotten them to stop by squirting them with a squirt bottle. You might try it it only takes a couple of times and they get the message and stop. |
please try to keep him!! its natural behavior for them to chase the cats. our yorkie chases the heck outta the cats. we use a spray bottle. when he's chasing the cat, just spray him. soon he'll get it! |
Awww please make getting rid of him your last resort...try the squirt bottle thing or google it online or something. :( Good luck..and welcome to YT! |
My yorkie chases my cat as well, I had the cat first so I would never give either of them up but I think the cat kinda likes it! I can tell when he is annoyed with her though because he jumps on the table where she can't get him. Sometimes I will pick her up so she doesn't chase him all the time but after a few mins she gets bored with the cat and comes and plays with me. So if I were you I would try to keep him and do as the others say and try the spray bottle! |

megans right ! :( |
I have 3 cats and 3 yorkies and yes they do chase my cats but my cats know how to get away from them by jumping on the table etc. out of their reach and it doesn't seem to bother them and yes I yell at them to leave them alone but they just chase & bark & forget! |
I don't hate cats its just that if i had to choose i would choose the yorkie.I mean if your going to spend that kind of money on a dog you must really want one.I guess i would have to see who was there 1st also.If you have had the cats for 2 years and the dog a few months than the cats win.But before i would get rid of the dog i spent my whole lifes savings on (how expencive they are)i would find some way to train the pup.Even if i had to pay someone.Really there has to be a better way than to get rid of any of your faimly members. Heather |
i agree. we've ahd my cats for 9 and 6 years, and i defenatly wouldn't give them up before the dog, and i'd never want to give up my baby. you're right, heather, there must be a better way then getting rid of him. |
I'm sorry, but I do sympathize and know what you are going thru. I have had a cat, Lucie for 7 years. she is spayed and declawed. Inside cat, never out. Her house is her territory! Now enter Millie - 12 wk old innocent. Wants to play with the cat, get's alot of the attention from us (has too, she's a puppy and we are vigiliant in her potty training, learining manners, ect) and is well.... a puppy with puppy behavior. She has taken over everything! and Lucie does not like it! period! So while Millie wants to play and chase her, Lucie sees her as a territorial perpetrator. Lucie will hiss, growl, stalk Millie (not in a good way either, very mean and out to get her). Can't control the behavior by sending Lucie outside, because Lucie is an indoor cat. Millie attempts to eat food from the Cat bowl, now Lucie won't let Millie near the kitchen where both bowls are. Lucie waits around corners waiting for Millie to show up. Thank God Lucie is declawed or else Millie would have been hurt and scarred severely, by now. It has been quite burdomsome in trying to keep them apart! Millie for the most part is not the initiator of the fights, Lucie is. (and by the way, I am getting real tired of hearing all the feral growling and hissing, too). but we are keeping on keeping on. Some days are better than others. We have been using the spray bottle quite a lot. Lucie really hates it! Talked to my vet about it and all he said is you've got to let them work it out on their own. So when Millie got bigger, we started letting the fights happen (before that we were stopping them), to get them out of the way and to let them decide on hierarchy, but we all have a long way to go! Lucie has had to give up a lot. Poor thing. But is can get very very fustrating! |

i agree with megan, iv got 4 cats and wouldnt even think of getting rid of them and nor would many other people, its your problem you dont like cats not the cats wendy and rosie :rose: :yorkiesar |
I've had my cats for 2 years, one yorkie for 1 1/2 yrs, and another yorkie for 6 months.. My yorkie chases my cats too, but they know how to get away.. and sometimes play back with them. And I've seen several times when my cat would rub up against my yorkies for affection. Unless they are actually hurting each other, I wouldn't consider giving up any of them. |
My apologies to Rustyboy for stepping on toes by posting this before she might, but I wanted to let you guys know that I received a email from her this morning. She's going to keep Rusty. She's been using some of the tips you guys gave her and it seems to be helping. I'm so glad it all worked out. Best wishes to Rusty and his mama. |
Oh thats great news! |
thats wonderful news!!! so glad she decided to keep him!!! :D |
Can I ask you guys why would you declaw a cat? Ive got 3 and Ive never heard of such a thing,Also my cairn has always chased and harrased my cats but they still come in side and smooch him and they certainly put him in his place. |
I got mine declawed so they didnt tear up the furniture. |

I too have my 2 cats declawed. I didn't want to but I also didn't want them to become outside cats. Growing up all our cats were outside cats and it just tore me up when they just disappeared. So I kept them inside and the furniture and even the wallpaper started to shred. Tried water bottles, cans with pennies, but it just wasn't working. So I had my 1st declawed. I cried & cried. And when the 2nd came along, I did it to him; I didn't think it would be fare to the first one. More for fighting reasons. I have stopped on the cat dept. I can't do it again to another cat. But I must say that when they want to come and kneed on you, it doesn't hurt. My cats have learned to make up without their claws. They can beat up my dogs very well. And when the chi's start to chase them or my GSP begins to stalk, they know how to leave the room. I have a baby gate that separates the kitchen to the living room. So the cats have their area and the dogs have theirs too. They CAN all learn to live together. It just takes some time. |

I brought my Kelsey over my parents house and they have a cat. Kelsey was curious and wanted to play with the cat I suppose and next thing I know the cat has scratched Kelsey in the eye! Her eye was full of blood and worried the living pageeba's out of me! I took her to the vet and they gave me an ointment so she is fine now..but you never know...it could've been a lot worse. BUT..that is why some people declaw their cats! lol |
I brought home a 2 yo recently neutered rescue on Oct. 5 who was deemed "cat friendly" at the shelter's assessment. My cat wasn't happy so hissed and ran off, and of course my new Yorkie thought what a fun game and chased her. Went online for some research and found several good articles about why you must never let your dog chase the cat when introducing them (worst case scenario, dog may one day encounter a clawed cat and lose an eye). Chasing a cat or any other animal is a behavioral issue because all dogs should be be able to be called off (whether it's a confrontation with another dog, cat, horse, mailman, child, etc. etc.) Thank goodness my new pup, Bowie, has shown that he knows what "No", "leave it" "drop it" and "come here" means. The goal is to teach the dog to ignore the cat until the cat warms up to them (dogs love to play chase by nature). Per one article's recommendation I've also put up child gates on two rooms which gives the cat a couple of safe haven rooms until she could get used to his presence without running and triggering a play chase response. They can now occupy the same space without him chasing her at all. |
