yorkie with mange Hi ...I been looking to adopt a yorkie in need of a home, I found one at a shelter not far from here...When I got someone from the shelter to call me back...I couldnt talk much, but she said she didnt know much about him(bio) only that he was saved from another shelter that was going to put him down because he has mange.. Does anyone know about mange???Im not sure I could take on a little guy with special needs :( I read on the internet mange can be passed on to humans????? |
Is it sarcoptic or demodectic? Sarcoptic is contagious to other dogs and to humans but in humans it just makes you itchy for a bit. They can't survive on humans for long. Demodectic mange isn't contagious and most dogs have it. Dogs with immune systems that aren't working properly allow these mites to get the upper hand and if treatment doesn't work, euthanasia is sometimes considered. |

my coworker adopted a yorkie with mange and her family ended up getting bites from the bug on the pup. they had to use special creams and have the house ext, along with washing everything! Sheets,curtains, carpets, pillows, furnature you get the idea. Everything is good now but she had a rough go, the dog had to be dipped several times and passed it on to her other yorkie as well who had to get the sulfer dips too. |
My first puppy (a terrier mix) had mange and was recovering from it when I got her. They gave her the treatments and by the time I got her at 6 months we were just waiting for her hair to grow back in fully. |
I commend you for taking this on. It is a time consuming process and there are different ways to treat it. Our Samira (the biewer in the avi) had Dem. Mange when she came to live with us... I also took her knowing this ahead of time and it is because of her condition that she was placed with us. She has fully recovered and is thriving now. My advise is to find a vet you absolutely trust and follow their instructions to the "T"! And... be wary of people who dole out advice and opinions that don't have any experience with it. Yorkie with mange Yes, commendation goes to you taking on the task of treating this mange. However, euthanasia? Hmm.... Would we euthanize those humans who have herpes or just give them Valtrex? There are options. Check with a veterinarian. There is a newer flea medication called Promeris that may be effective as a mange treatment. New medications come out on the market yearly. Do some research and see what works best. I hope you find something that works well. |

From what I understand they can be treated. You may want to email a rescue - specifically www.puppymillrescue.com they may be able to help you out with info. on treatment etc. There was two little Yorkies last year on petfinder that had dem (oh hell I can't spell. LOL) mange and they were coming around and up for adoption. I think once the pup is in a loving home and under a vet's care it will work wonders. Elaine |
Hi...Im sorry if I miss led you guys..I didnt adopt the little guy with mange..although I would love to help him, I just cant take that on right now...looking to adopt is really heartbreaking..I swear I want them all:( . Im sure we will find one. Margaret |
a bit of FYI, our Daisy has Demodectic Mange,, its present in ALL dogs and some humans,, (I've done oddles of research since finding out she had it),, I had her spayed immediately,, as its is ONLY transmitted mother to Nursing pup,, and comes out in dogs with immunity problems, ,our Vet (whom we love) treated her with the newest (that we know of) treatment,, oral meds,, 15 days of Clavamox (anitbiotic),, along with 60+ days of Promectin (super stong stuff) she required NO heartworm meds for all this time,, as the Promectin would give her the protection needed,, I also got the Goodwinol (ointment) but only used it once,, the oral meds did the trick!! QUICKLY!!! there was an almost immediate turn around for her with the oral meds and hopefully since having her spayed,, she'll have no reoccurence of the problem,, but its always possible,, but heres hoping for no more outbreaks,, it was heartbreaking,, but i was VERY glad to find out and get it taken care of so quickly and well,, its TREATABLE,, but incurable and NOT Contagious,, to other pets or humans |

Lancelot who is 3 yo this month had mange when my DH purchased him. He is now very healthy and I don't regret not sending him back to that breeder. It took months of giving him antibiotics and an allergy tab for itching, baths once a week in a special shampoo, but he was worth it. I wouldn't let this discourage you from adopting a pet from a rescue. I have two Yorkies, one Maltese and a s**t Tzu and Lance is the youngest of the bunch. There is a very special bond between the two of us, because of all the care he received. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. Good Luck to you. If you have any questions just email me. :) |
