I got asked to leave Home Depot once, I was actually followed by one very persistent female worker ... I told her my dog was a service dog, she asked what for, I told her "epilepsy" (BTW, they are NOT allowed to ask) ... and then she asked if I had a doctor's note ... all this while following me around the pristine environs of Home Depot .... Now, Home Depot has a BIG sign saying NO PETS ALLOWED ... since I now have 2 Yorkies, I really do not take them with me into the stores .... |
It really does depend on the store managers. Lowe's, Home Depot, Office Max, my bank branch all let me bring either dog in...my yorkie and my golden retriever...they call themselves "pet friendly." I actually write letters to store managers thanking them for letting me bring them and assuring them I'll remain a faithful customer to a store that values their customers. Works great! |
New stroller We just bought a stroller and took our two Yorkies to the Balloon Races. They were zipped in, settled right down and felt nice and secure. The noise didn't bother them either. Wish I had discovered the stroller sooner. We always take them to PetCo with us, but haven't tried taking them to stores. We are big on finding pet friendly hotels where they are welcome. I only wish we could take them on cruise ships.:( |
I normally take Koda every where I go, She is my office assistant!!! The other day I had a horrible experience, I went to Wendy's and she was with me, I didn't wanted to leave her in the car and the drive thru was packed...So I took my chances!!! She was inside her bag and bothering no one, I bet she was cleaner than the nasty lady who told me I had to leave after I had already pay for my food and was just waiting...." I just made a huge stink out of it and asked for my $$$ back" She saw me all along with her and say nothing at the beggining and then she wanted to be an idiot....SO I LEFT:aimeeyork |

In Philadelphia I am allowed to take her INSIDE one of the restaurants and they don't care at all and it is a very upscale restaurant. As long as she is tiny and in a bag they say OK. I, needless to say, love it there. :) |
From my own experiences and from what people say here, it seems as though it really depends on the workers in the store and how they feel about dogs. I take Kiwi into the mall and everyone at Macy's and the Body Shop, etc. all love her to pieces. As long as she is inside the bag, they don't care even if she sticks her head out. The bank and the post office seem to be the same way. The Home Depot here doesn't have a problem at all, but I haven't had her walk in on the leash, always inside a bag. I have been afraid to let her be seen in Target because so many people have been kicked out of Target and they seem to be big about enforcing rules (like the no soliciting rule). So she goes into her carrier and no one sees her. We haven't had a problem. I really don't see what the big deal is if she is in a bag and wish more places would let her in as long as she was in the bag. How could she possibly contaminate the food if she is in the bag? But, I respect the rules and don't take her into the grocery store or restaurants. I think in Europe, many places allow dogs in restaurants and I haven't heard of anyone getting sick because a dog was sitting next to them. |
So, these places that are "pet friendly", is there a way to find out which places it is ok and what places its not? Is it just guessing? If you dont get kicked out, then it is okay??? I live in Michigan and never see anyone with their pups in the store. My yorkie is a dolly but he is ten and a half pounds...not a bag baby...he would break my shoulder. My chihuahua is tiny but very naughty. I think she would rat me out if I brought her in a store. But she will be going to classes soon so I hope she starts behaving better. |
I had her in a tote bag ... Oh, I must clarify, when I had Monday in Home Depot, she was in a bag .... not on the floor ... this lady was just being picky .... I have never walked the dog in anywhere except the bank where they really welcome her .... And I am not Leona Helmsley and she is not "Trouble" ... so no BIG book account there for her .... |
The Home Depot near us is pet friendly. They allow both my yorkie and my golden retriever who is just on a leash. They even gave them both kid aprons to wear. I'd call around and speak to the store managers and ask! Many stores are realizing the value of being pet friendly, but you also have to realize that some folks won't even clean up after their pet outside, let alone inside. Some will allow only if the dog is in a bag. Some places don't allow pets since they cater to people with allergies and don't want the dander to aggravate customers...I can see their point. Also, keep in mind that most municipalities forbid animals in any facility that serves or sells food. If you were caught in there that Wendy's or other facility would be subjected to a large fine. I'd take the time to call around and figure out which stores will let you in. |

I live in Portland, Oregon and the city is very pet friendly. My baby has been to Lowe's, Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond, some restaurants (pet friendly of course) and some wood supply places. I usually carry her the area is unsafe or busy, but most of the time she is on her harness/leash and loves to explore the new places. Have you tried googling 'pet friendly' in your city? I found a HUGE list of businesses that are welcoming to pets. Also, most businesses in the area have doggie treats. Not so healthy for my overweight girl, but still very considerate. Maybe you should move here. JK. :) |
