Collar size Hi there. I don't even have my Yorkie yet, but I was taking a look at this dog collar at a small independent dog store... and I must have it! :) It is very cute. However, I'm not sure what size I should purchase. They come in the following sizes: 10", 12", 14", 16". Which size would work for most Yorkies? I'm assuming a 10"? What do you all think? Thanks for the help! |
Best is NOT to put collars on them, there have been a lot of accidents with peoples yorkies, wearing collars. We have a member who's yorkie accidently hung herself and died wearing a collar. Also, collars can cause trachea collaps in yorkies, thats why MOST of us use harnesses!! I always use cat harnesses on my girls, you can adjust them in size, they soft and easy to put on. |
Everyone says not to use a collar, but I use one sometimes as decoration (but never inside a cage). BUT I would definitely recommend using a harness to walk your new furbaby, though. And if he/she's a baby, the best is to get the smallest possible. When I first got Baby I bought her a Coach collar, and it was WAY too big for her for the first few months cuz she was little. Now it fits her perfectly, and it's a XS (she's 10+lbs). :D |
Thanks, guys. :) I've read about this and I've decided to just use a harness when walking, because their necks are so fragile - but I think the collar is so cute for "off time" when I'm around the dog. :) Would that be safe? |

I like to keep a collar on Ginger (when she's not crated). I NEVER use it to walk her, but each of her collars has an i.d. tag attached. Hopefully, if she ever got out, she'd be wearing a collar. I never leave her harness on after her walk because it tangles her hair. Therefore, putting the tags on the harness would be worthless. As far as size goes, they're all so different. But if your's will be a pup at first, I'd say you'd be safe with the smallest one for now. When do you get your little furball? |
I never use collars. The harness I like best is a step in harness that has a slide on the leash part so it fits from 2 pounds to 10 pounds. |
step in harness all the way everday... way to gooooooooooooo |

Just a thought for you......I walk my on a harness only but I do have a small collar on him that has his tags on it incase he ever gets lost. I keep this on him at all times because you just never know and lately there have been so many posts about people losing their dogs! It has his name my city, state and my home and cell number and I also have that he is microchipped inscribed on the back. But you and other YTers are right I would never walk him on it just for safety in my case. Plus you are right they are very cute! :) Hope this helps! |
Thanks for the advice, everyone! :) |
