Looking for a good harness....
 

Can you share your recommendations for a easy to put on harness? I want to find one that is fast to get on and off. I currently use a figure eight harness but it's a struggle to get it on and off of Lex. I dont' want to keep it on Lex all the time. I need something that can go on and off easy so when my 10 year old has to walk him she can get it on and off easy.

Have you ever seen the harnesses that velcro on and off? That is what I use...

Can't think of a brand off the top of my head.
But I do know that you should shop for one that goes across the chest rather than between the legs and up the center of the rib cage and back around for sure. No need to put undue stress on their sternum (sp?).

Velcro Harness
 

How strong is the velcro harness. Lex likes to run like a mad man when he is outside. He is still in his unruly puppy phase and likes to tease me at times. Do you think it will be strong enough to hold?

I will post any good ones I find. Send me links to whatever you find as well.

i have one i ordered from imapreciouspup.... it was 19.99 and it came in several choice colors and included the matching leash

They seem to work really good for me! I havent had a problem with them! Also there are alot of people that will put the D-rings on the pups clothes tinkerbellscloset.com has that option also! So its like a shirt with a hook on it to attach a leash!

This is the step in that I use. It goes on Tank really easily. You just put one foot on either side of the middle strap and hook around his back. The nice thing about it is we have alot of big dogs in the neighborhood that I don't trust so if one comes around I can just lift him up by the leash right into my arms.

I like some of the velcro ones..they are so cute. I will check the step in ones as well. I would like something to dress him up with but I want him safe. He does think he is my knight in shining armour when we are out. He makes sure to let anyone passing know not to get too close. He also loves to run like the wind on the lawn in circles like he is nuts. So I want to be sure he is secure.

Maybe I will buy one of each. I was talking to someone on another chat and she wants to try and modify the velcro ones for one that has the little plastic clip that is on the step in ones for me. I will post the prototype.

Got alot of the Velcro ones, but to the point where the velcro is wearing off...no problem just went and bought more velcro and take old off and sew new on !

I've been using the step-in harnesses for Lucy but unfortunately if I forget to take it off of her when we come back she chews it off. I think she's had probably 6-7 harnesses and she's just 11 months old. I hate the ones that go over their head because I have to adjust to fit over her head and then tighten it up so it stays where it should. I just ordered the Puppia harness from ebay, we'll see how that works.

Ok I thought that Lex was the only acrobat that accomplished this one. He is on his third harness because somehow he always seems to be able to find a way to pull out one leg and chew up the thing. Mind you I have only had him for a month now...lol.

I have to leave the harness on during the day so when my daughter comes home from school and walks his behind it's easy for her to go with him. He gets too excited and she can't calm him down fast enough...lol. At night after his last walk I take it off so he can sleep. I just got a step-in-harness that I won on ebay. I like the logistics of it. The previous one that he ate up was from K-9 caterers. The other regular one that I have I had from my shih tzu puppy but it seems to wide for his little body. My husband is laughing at me because he said I am putting as much thought into this as I would buying a new bag...lol.

I really want to buy him one of the cutsey fabric vests so he can look cute. It's a good thing I dont' have a female or we would be in trouble with all the stuff I would buy. I would surely try and hone up my sewing skills. But thankfully there are ton of rather talented ladies on YT so I can just get one from them. :D

Our Chewie is a little wriggle bug when we get home from work and let him out of the crate - so I can understand your concerns about your daughter capturing him, harnessing him, and leading him outside.. But I do urge you to look through the forums and read up on reasons that your Yorkie should not be left unsupervised in a harness, collar, etc.

We struggled with a figure 8 harness at first (we were new Yorkie owners, and didn't know any better!) Then we went to the step-in harness, which was FINE aside from the fact that it took time to get our little wriggler into it - as he would wriggle away and we would waste a lot of time trying to keep his hair from getting caught in the cliips...

Anyhow, we DID wind up buying a new harnessing solution from another YorkieTalk member - Brooke. We purchased a leather step-in-harness-leash-combination. It is FABULOUS! When we get home all we have to do is clip Chewie's collar on, have him step into the harness, and away we go! I know that I posted some photos a while back, and I've never linked something inside of a post, but I'll give it a try here:

We have seen many Yorkies quite happy in the Puppia harnesses, and have thought about purchasing one for Chewie - but I don't think that it's really his "style" right now - he's not a real sporty dog!

So, I wish you the best of luck on the quest for the harness! Maybe spending some good time with your daughter showing her how to calm down Lex when she gets home... Nothing will be an overnight solution, but there will certainly be many baby steps...
