Best shoes for Yorkies? I love taking my Yorkie on long walks (and she loves it too!). Recently someone told me that over time this can cause the pads of their feet to wear out and cause problems as they get older. They suggested that I get some shoes for her. But I'm not sure where to look! Any suggestions on the best shoes for Yorkies? For reference: My Kismet is 1 year old, about 8.5 pounds. |
How long are your walks? I take mine out daily, 3 times a day. The morning walk is just a quick potty break. But the afternoon and evening walks are each around 0.5 mile. They're 1.5 years and 3 years old, 4.5 pounds and 5.5 pounds. Both do okay during these walks without shoes. I would only suggest wearing shoes for protection during very hot times of the year, when the asphalt and concrete are too hot for their pads. Or during the winter, when the roads and sidewalks are salted. I believe that dogs pads are naturally meant for the outdoors and for walking. If they wear shoes at such a young age, their paws won't have a chance to develop the natural thickness to protect themselves from the outdoors. And also, a plus side of these daily walks, their nails don't need to be trimmed as much. :) Here's my Casie taking a nice morning stroll :) : https://www.instagram.com/p/BMed83zBGX5/ And both of them walking to their Halloween party last year.. hehe.. https://www.instagram.com/p/BMQAGAHh1AH/ |
Shoes I can only tell you that all animals not just the darling Yorkie that we love to spoil had an amazing designer that thought up the blueprint for each and every animal and every detail about each one was analyzed and perfected to the last detail. Ergo, they have no need for shoes except as was said earlier in one post in cases of potential damage like extreme heat or ice and the like. |
Oh that's good to know! The thing is... these are LONG walks. Sometimes as short as a mile, but then we've gone as far as 5-7 miles. Just want to make sure we can keep walking together as long as possible. :) |
Karen is a YT member, Alldogboots.com is her site, she can help you I am sure! I personally do not find a need for shoes for Jackson as of yet. Like said above, in cold temps or too hot temps, but otherwise, their paw pads are there for a reason. We often walk 4-7 miles and he's always been fine. :) He's now 8. |
I wonder if after your long walks you could either massage his tootsies with baby oil or olive oil or some such protective application. Could be a thought for you to consider. If you googled how to protect dog's pads you might get some good helpful tips there. Hope this has been of some help for you. |
