Are you really using tearless shampoo???? I recently bought some IOD tearless shampoo for Macy and Molly's face. I was giving them a bath this morning and couldn't wait to try out this new shampoo. Before I used it on them I tried it on my eyes first. OMG....it burned my eyes. I am so glad I tried it on myself first. Right now, I am so disappointed in IOD. How can they say it is tearless when it burned my eyes??? So, I guess I am on the hunt for a new tearless shampoo. From now on...I am going to try any tearless shampoo on myself first before I will use it on them. |
I had a similar experience with a tearless John Paul pet shampoo that I used on Max his first year. When Max had eye problems and I started testing products on my own eyes, I was horrified to discover that the so-called tearless stung worse than my own shampoo. We use Tropiclean Spa facial cleanser and tear stain remover. It is gentle on Max's eyes. No shampoo feels good in the eyes, but that one hasn't caused us any problems. |

Pet shampoo formulation is different than human tearless/shampoo. Dogs have a more acidic pH than us humans. Even though a product is tearless, I will still be careful not to get the actual product into the eyes. You can also email IOD w/ any concerns & questions you have. Regarding the article below, I think that's meant to be "Please note" What is a Tearless Dog Shampoo? Please not that if the tearless dog shampoo gets into a human eye, it will burn. Note that any pet formulation that has a certain kind of effect on a certain pet does not guarantee the same effect on different pets or on you. |
Thank you for the informative article. Now I am confused....maybe I have been giving my dogs baths the wrong way for years. I use regular dog shampoo everywhere but a tearless shampoo on the head and mustache. If I don't use some kind of shampoo on their head they end up greasy with a smelly lady beard. I am going to try the TropiClean Spay Facial Cleanser and see how it does. |

When I give Emma a bath I do the beard/stache and head then wipe with a wash cloth instead of rinsing so I avoid the eyes. |
I've been using IOD tearless shampoo for puppies for 6 weeks now. I can't get myself to lather their faces in it. I stop at the ears and neck. So I'm sorry I can't help you there. I just rinse their little faces off with water when I give them their baths. I like this product so far, but I would like to try splash and shine one. ~ Rhea |
I use Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo on my dogs, per the Vet recommendation. It is the purple one - so gentle on them & i am careful around the eyes as well. They look & smell wonderful. |
Dogs, especially puppies, have sensitive skin. Using shampoo that is meant for an adult human on a pet can be too abrasive and cause skin irritation. If the shampoo drips into the dog's eyes, it will harm the eyes and cause pain.For breeds that have wrinkles, it is best to wipe the wrinkles clean with wet wipes to ensure that there is no dirt or build-up that can emit a smell. A tip to keeping a dog clean and smelling fresh if they stand low to the ground is to use a small amount of Vaseline. Rub a dime-sized amount of Vaselinei nto the belly of the dog to repel moisture. Keep in mind that the more the dog is groomed, the less often it needs bathing, which keeps excessive cleaning from irritating the skin. |
