Flea and Tick Shampoo recommendations please.... My cousin called me today and was asking about a good flea and tick shampoo and dip that she can get at the store....I have NO idea about effectiveness of store bought flea/tick control. Does anyone use flea and tick shampoo you buy at the grocery store in the pet department? She asked about Hartz Ultra Guard....I told her I do not have this issue so I do not need this product....does anyone know about this product and if it is any good? I know they pulled something off the shelves years ago because it was killing dogs.....all I remember was it had a black label on the bottle!!!! Does anyone have any suggestions for a cost effective, store bought flea/tick shampoo, that wont make her dogs sick? |
I have no suggestions, wanted to comment on Hartz mountain. They had a recall on their flea collars back in the 90's, it was killing dogs. Since that time I have not purchased anything made by them. I use Frontline monthly so I don't have flea tick prob. (hope I didn't just put the eye on me lol) |
I remembered something about a recall on the flea/tick collars, so I warned her not to use that....she was looking at the shampoo from Hartz. I wish Dawn had a flea barrier if you bathed the dog with it....it does a wonderful job of killing fleas immediately I guess, but I dont have any idea about any residual effectiveness! |
I was looking at a neem based shampoo by tropiclean earlier this year- Just in case- but I haven't had the need- Mink sheen works for us. |
Flea Control I personally have tried different flea shampoos and flea treatments for my dog. She has allergies and is very sensitive to a lot of foods and treatments including topical, some oral and other items that omit an odor. I started to look for alternative things to do for her and found the best defense for her was to give her food that was as natural and holistic as possible. After making her food she now has a better immune system that helps ward of most fleas. I also found a way to ward off the rest of the fleas by adding a few drops of Rosemary or Eucalyptus oil to her shampoo and making a final rinse of Rosemary water that I don't rinse off. This leaves her with a beautiful shinny coat at the same time as warding off those pesty fleas. You can also slice a fresh lemon and put in 1 cup of boiling water. Leave the lemon water to set over night. Apply some of the lemon water all over the dog every couple of days. I hope this helps. :aimeeyork,:) |

When you say a few drops, do you mean 5, 6 or 7 drops? Also, how do you make rosemary water. I, fortunately, have fresh rosemary in my herb patch. How many sprigs to a pint of water? I presume you pour boiling water over it and let it steep overnight? Hope you don't mind all these questions! |
I've never used a flea shampoo that I found effective. In recent years I use lavender baby shampoo and found it effective but have to bathe basically daily. For the past few months I have been using diatomaceous earth to treat our yard and a sprinkle on the girls food and bedding a few times a week ....we haven't seen fleas. |
I don't like Hartz products personally. Can't you buy Frontline at Walmart now? I would prefer it over Hartz but that's just my opinion. |

I did not think of this....I am loosing my mind completely! I had even posted a real money saving tip on YT about Frontline and how to save tons of money by getting the solution for huge dogs and then breaking it down with that formula for the right dosage....I will send her that formula......that breaks it down to just a bare minimal cost per dose per dog! Thanks for the memory jog!!! |
