Oster flea and tick shampoo My girl friend tried using this shampoo on our Yorkie . After wards, he was scratching more and panting heavily. Has anyone else had a similar problem from this shampoo. Thanks in advance! |
I would discontinue use of this shampoo. It contains "naturally-derived Pyrethrins from Chrysanthemum flowers" to kill fleas and ticks. While the natural version of this pesticide is deemed relatively safe, some dogs have a bad reaction to it. I would use another shampoo and look into using one of the vet-approved flea and tick preventatives. |
We rinsed him off again used a different shampoo and rinsed him off twice. The main concern was the excessive panting. I had wondered if their was an oil in this shampoo blocking the pours to our Yorkie . We tossed the shampoo. I looked on line for consumer complaints an found this forum :) |

Glad you found the forum. Welcome to you and your adorable little guy. I have found this forum very helpful in taking care of my 2 boys and I hope you do too. :) |
Just for grins and giggles, Dawn dish soap will kill fleas. It could possibly cause dry skin, though. I have also found that Murphy's Oil soap kills fleas and leaves the coat shiney. Rinse very well or they fell a tad sticky when dry. I learned these tricks when I worked at a veterinary clinic. Invaribly, someone would bring in a litter of newborn puppies or kittens after they started dying from flea anemia. These were the only safe ways of removing the fleas. Most fleas soaps are labled as not for use on nursing animals (and quite a few for nothing less than 9-12 weeks of age). |
I second the dawn soap, I had a puppy once with fleas (not a yorkie) and the fleas were gone with one wash. The puppy had no issues afterwards. |
While we are on this subject, does anyone spray their yard with anything to kill fleas? |

We never picked up fleas in our yard or neighborhood. We have picked up a few at the office park where we walk because a lot of traveling dogs stop there. |
We have cats that roam all over here. Not sure who they belong to. I'm betting they bring tons of fleas in the yard |

I think fleas have grown worse nationwide. I think my father uses spetracide/triazicide spray -- attaches to the hose and sprays on. Bug be Gone, I think is a brand name ?? |
