Greenies Hype? Ok everyone.... I have never used Greenies, when they came out I had a Labrador who could swallow the big ones whole! So after looking at the cost of them, I decided that we would not be getting our dog hooked... So we missed the greenie craze. Can you folks who use them tell me the Pros/Cons of them? Is it hype or are they really worth their weight in gold? Do tell! |

I thought they were like a chew bone/dental aid/treat? I could just picture my lab choking on them, he was a big chewer and would destroy a beef hip bone in less than 30 mins! Gone! It was amazing! I was afraid to give him anything that small... I have not bought any for Pixie, too busy buying everything else... lol Just wondered what all the hype was about..... |

I have heard way to many bad stories about them, like dogs dying because the greenies aren't 100% digestable, and the vet autopsies the dog & finds the greenie in the intestine. I won't feed those to my dog at all! :thumbdown Some people here still do, they just say to watch them while they have it, but I choose not to even do that. It's totally up to you though, just research it a little. |
I love Greenies! Stewie does, too. They help maintain strong teeth/fresh breath and keep him very busy! I take them away when they get too small. He doesn't "gulp" them. He chews them intently under supervision. I am so tired of hearing all these stories; there's always new stuff that is trendy to dislike. |
Pros: They work great for cleaning teeth and freshing breath. cons: only 85% digestible, 52% Protein (which means you must limit the amount of food intake to make up for the protein levels), easily choked on, and just plain out isn't a good idea. Best of Luck. If you would like something for bad breath I recommend and use Breath Busters. You can get them at Petsmart or Petco. They're biscuts with eucilyptous (sp?) and they're easily breakable. I think they smell good. if you're looking at something to clean the teeth: The best method is tooth brushing. Make sure to use dog toothpaste and a dog toothbrush. Human toothbrushe bristles are too hard, even the soft ones. |

We don't make up stories to scare people, a lot of the stories that come up are on products that have the warning labels on them in plain eyesight, but people never take the time out to read them. We're simply trying to make people aware of this. As far as the new hype, yes there is constantly new stuff coming out. But by getting the word out about previous issues with other products, it makes buyers aware of possible hazards. By doing such we're not only protecting them, we're protecting their dogs. |
Yikes... I will stuck to brushing and avoid these high priced chews... I just never understood the price! maybe they have gone down since they came out... ? Thanks for the info... and I agree, if not properly supervised, any treat, toy, or household item can be harmfull.... That does not mean its wrong to use these things... just exercise caution when doing so. |
I've heard all the horror stories also. I've always been the type of person to say "better safe than sorry". I don't want to take the risk. |
I give my girls greenies,(Petey doesn't like them) but I only give them 1 once in a while, Bell chews hers until its gone.. Which is fine. They problem comes when the dog swallows it without chewing it up.. Then it sits in the stomach, and takes forever to digest. |

Once (a long time ago) I gave one to Bell, one to Lilly, and one to Petey. Well Bell loves them, Lilly will eat them sometimes and Petey never (didn't know this at the time) Well Bell went around and ate all three.. Her poop was green the next dayu, but we never had a problem. I'm not saying that there aren't problems with greenies, I know that there is, but you have to find out if this will affect your dog. Does your dog chew things or swallow them whole?? |
