Bad breath? I have 2 yorkies and their breath is terrible! I have had teeth checked by my vet. I know to brush and I use an oral jel the vet advised. They both are on Fromm food which I feel is very good quality feed. The Vet suggested trying something to go in their drinking water. Just wondered if anyone else has breath problems or uses something in the water that works? |
Have their anal glands checked.... |
They are checked every 3 mos and cleaned if needed so don't think that is it. Was at the Vet this morning but all else he had to offer was putting something in drinking water. Thanks |
Stuff in the water has not been very helpful for us. One thing I have notice is that sometimes what I smell is not all the breath but the hair/mustache , so we started rinsing wiping it regularly and the breath seemed better. Still have to brush though. |
Bad breathe? Give them celery sticks..... Amazing! |
Wow! Never heard of that. Mine love carrots but not sure they would like celery? Worth a try! |
We brush teeth after breakfast and use the gel before bed, after meds. The gel is designed to kill bacteria in their mouth and they can wake up with morning breath too. As long as I do these two things, this way all of my dogs dont have bad breath. |

If their teeth have been checked by a vet and there isn't anything wrong with the teeth/gums, then you might need to look at their diet. Fromm is a good food. But even the best of foods can cause digestive problems that manifest as bad breath. |

Please let me know if the Gold Fromm is any better on the breath. I been thinking maybe it could be the food. Both are doing so well on it though. |
What kind of toothpaste recommendations? I see you are talking about a gel? |

The water type is full of chemicals and can't be good for them. I just send my Yorkie for teeth cleaning every year and take out whatever bad teeth there is and brush his teeth and gums every night with a gel called Breathalyser from the vet. My dog is born with bad teeth genetically so says his vet. We still need to send him for teeth cleaning every year eventhough we brush his teeth every night. |
Just saw the old post I made. I changed my dogs from Fromm grain free beef to their pork and peas. It completely took away the bad breath. Now my concern is pork? I always heard not to feed a dog pork. They both are doing great on it. No stomach issues. I just wonder about staying long term on pork? |

There are some dog foods made w/pork. I've fed Party Animal canned food w/ salmon & pork, they did excellent on it & loved it. It's perfectly fine, you can check the fat content on the label. Obviously, they don't use the fatty part of the pork, like bacon...that would be bad. Any table scraps of seasoned pork for people would be bad too. The Dog Food Project - Myths about Dog Nutrition Pork should not be fed because it causes pancreatitis in dogs A statement I have encountered quite often recently, unlike any material that substantiates the claim. According to veterinary literature, the most common causes for pancreatitis are a high fat, low protein diet obesity trauma (car accidents, falling) other diseases (Cushing's syndrome, diabetes) tumors some drugs and toxins (e.g. antibiotics, insecticides) genetic predisposition (hyperlipidemia, e.g. mini schnauzer, cocker spaniel) As part of a well balanced diet, pork isn't any more dangerous than beef, lamb or chicken. The fat content is key, and many pets suffer from pancreatitis when fed excessively fatty, greasy table scraps - which are not part of a balanced diet. The most susceptible animals are those who don't eat anything but kibble all year and suddenly get an overload of "goodies" on thanksgiving or other holidays. One other thing that doesn't quite fit the bill is the fact that there is a good number of premium quality dog foods that use pork meal as a protein source. I very much doubt that a single manufacturer out there would risk their excellent reputation by purposefully including an ingredient in their food that is a proven cause of pancreatitis. |
Jack started having bad breath and the vet said his teeth were fine - just a small build up of plaque but not enough to have a dental done. I started using the CET poultry flavored toothpaste on him and within a couple of weeks his bad breath is gone. Make sure you get way in the back of your pups mouth. Here is the toothpaste I use oh and I also give them a Dentastix, one every other day or so. CET Pet Toothpaste for dogs & cats |
