Flea & Tick Med Question
 
Hi Everyone, I have seen posts on various types of flea & tick meds and I have a question...

I have used a topical med on my dogs previously until the end of last year when I had a conversation with one of our vet techs where I asked about the effectiveness of the product when it says that I can give the dog a bath (I think) after 24 - 48 hours. My vet tech told me that I needed to leave it on all month for it to be effective otherwise I was just washing off the product.

Because I don't want to do that, I plan on talking with my Vet about a different type of flea med and will be asking about a pill type med.

I wondered if anyone else was leaving the topical on their dogs for a full month without washing? I just don't believe anyone is doing that. Am I mistaken??:confused:

I use topical flea meds (Frontline for the boys and Revolution for my female). I don't bathe them for two days before and two days after application. It lasts all month.

I use Revolution and bathe after 2 hours of application (as it states on the package). Different products have different time requirements, but none that I know of say to leave on all month long.

(Your vet tech needs retraining!)

You see...that's what we were using but out vet tech said differently. I was sure that when we first started using Frontline, we followed the same routine as what you listed and I didn't think anything of it. I was really surprised to hear that same tech tell me I needed to leave it on all month, till the next treatment. I just can't do that. I can't stand the greasy feeling. I think I'm gonna have to talk to the vet again!!

We just switched from Trifexsis (pill) to Advantage Multi after hearing that the pill may be causing issues in small breeds. The front desk people at the vet said to only bathe P-Nut 2x a month or we'd be washing the topical off. Let me just say that will not work for us. :eek: So I went to the manufacturer and they said the dog can bathe/swim 90 minutes after application; the product will still be effective. We did our first application today - we'll see how it goes!

The topical products work by being absorbed into the skin. As for Revolution, leaving it on longer than two hours will not accomplish any stronger/longer protection, because the maximum dosage has been all absorbed after that amount of time. You can lessen the protection by washing it off sooner, which you would want to do if your pup has any unexpected reaction to the product, but once it's left on for the required amount of time, they've gotten the full dose.

No, it's topical... I prefer it bc it's a single chemical as opposed to a combo and it also takes care of Heartworm at the same time.... so my pups don't have to take two different products (and I only have to buy one product!) and I also treat my cats with it. (under vet instructions/supervision)

i use revolution also and for the same reasons but also frontline plus and advantix ii were no longer working for me. i didnt realize i could wash them after two hours though i need to reread my directions...thanks :)

I had mentioned "Revolution" to my Vet and she said they really don't like to treat for things that aren't a concern in our area and we could talk more about it in the near future. I believe Sophie's next appointment will be the right time so I was looking for some input from others here.

So do I understand that there is no "pill" or "chewable" that I can give Sophie for flea & tick prevention??

There are pills, but as you say not for fleas AND ticks as far as I know. Both (Trifexis and Sentinel) that P-Nut was previously on were for fleas, etc. and not ticks( Trifexis, has been a subject of concern here, so we took him off of it. There are a couple of Yorkie owners on here whose vets will not prescribe it for the smaller dogs).

You are right, there is no pill that does both fleas and ticks.

Well, some dogs in our rural community never get to go to the State Park and don't spend much time out of doors period. We however, spend a lot of time outdoors and at the Park so I can't imagine what Sophie doesn't need to be protected against. LOL I guess I'll just have to wait to see what she recommends. Does this make any sense at all???

Drew got all itchy when we used the Advantix. Plus the vet gives him a heart worm shot. He's a real little guy, only 6 lbs at almost 3 years old and had a really bad case of fleas last Summer. We had rabbits living under our deck. Every time I found them and we paid to get him cleaned up in a couple days he was buggy again. Drove me nuts. He was non to happy either. Not really looking forward to this Summer. Hope we succeeded in chasing off the bunnies.

Any suggestions?

I use Revolution for Oscar.. He does best on it...
Heartguard makes him vomit & Advantix gave him ugly raw welts on his back..
