Looking for suggestions for a dog ramp/ stairs for a tiny dog Hey guys, Does anyone use a pet ramp or steps for a tiny dog and would recommend it? I'm looking for something that can be shipped to Canada. My dog is expected to max out at 3.5-4lbs according to the growth charts and I don't plan on using them until he reaches a more mature size (right now he is just over 2lbs). Any suggestions would be appreciated! |
i've used both, and i'd definitely recommend a ramp over any type of stairs -- i'd especially advise against stairs beyond 2 or 3 steps, as just one mis-step, and a toy dog of any size can easily fall off and get injured. besides which, yorkies especially, are very leery of stairs and it can take a long time for them to learn to use them...in fact, many refuse to ever do so. a ramp, on the other hand, is much safer, and most take to it quite easily -- usually, just a few tries (with treats put along the way), and virtually all are able to master it with no problem. |
Thats what I was thinking! Stairs did seem a little hazardous to me.. Thank you for the advice I think I will go with a ramp! |
I think I got my foam ramp that is scalloped for easier traction, on Amazon.com. If you have any other pets, you would want to be VERY cautious with that tiny baby getting knocked off the side of the ramp by other pets, eagerly rushing up the ramp.....a fall off the side of the ramp could be fatal.... |
I got pet stairs from Petco. The girls use it to get up and down my bed because it is higher than most beds. Rosie has been using them since she was 6 months old. We have never had any problems with them at all. Mikki was 3 1/2 lb when we got her and she did just fine with them too. |
The thing with Grim is that he cannot jump! I don't know if it's his size or he just hasn't learned how to but he even struggled to get into his bed lol. He is quite low to the ground so I'd like something that he could just walk up on to. A ramp with sides would be ideal.. I wouldn't want him falling off the side. I don't have other pets so thankfully that's one less thing I have to worth about but I can definitely see him falling off of it at least once even without being knocked off! Thanks everyone for your ideas can't wait to get a ramp so he can join me on the couch a little easier! |
Not with Harry :aimeeyork but with Rosie our Lab....she got arthritis very badly when she was about 13 and what she found difficult was getting in and out of the car :( Andy made her a ramp out of wood and put sides on it, it was hinged underneath in the middle so it could fold and was transportable. She took to it straight away :) I wish you luck with whatever you decide! Sally + Harry x |
You do NOT want to put, or allow, a new puppy, especially a tiny one, up on a bed....fall from a bed and it is all over but the hole digging. |
I found these patterns online. I don't know how crafty you are but I'm going to investigate to see how much it costs to buy the foam. You could make it to the exact dimensions you need and make it match your house! I think I'm going to eventually get this and make a ramp when my puppy is older. We'll see haha.. I ordered stairs and ramps from Chris at: topdogsteps@mchsi.com He makes the ramps and stairs and ships them out. He ships with fedex and charges only what he pays for the shipping. I am not sure he ships to Canada. I think he is located in Missouri. |
