Shampoo/Conditioner Recommendations I'm VERY new to the world of grooming and shampoos, so I've tried to look up reommendations online. The options are absolutely overwhelming! I don't think I've ever had such a hard time picking out hair products for myself! :p However, I'm looking for something really specific, so I thought that I might try this method. We have a new Yorkie puppy (7 mons old) and he is ALL BOY. The smellier it is, the grosser it is, the messier it is... the more he loves it! So baths are very much a necessity at my house! I've look at, smelled, and/or tried numerous products over the last few months and get stuck in 2 very important areas: 1) His coat will look great for about 2 or 3 hours, then get this matted "shaggy" look. I can comb him out and w/in 2 hours, he's back to looking like a very cute Ewok. Nothing seems to keep him soft and fluffy for longer than a few hours (even if he's inside and not rolling around in the mud outside!) 2) Many of the shampoos/conditioners that I've found are heavily scented and kick of MY allergies! I really don't want anything that is overly frou-frou, flowery, "baby powder", that kind of thing. He comes over to snuggle and either I start sneezy or my skin starts to break out. For what it's worth, I can't wear/use strongly scented lotions, body soap, laundry deterent or perfumes myself. Can anyone offer some guidance? |
My two both looked shaggy as puppies, they both have silky hair, Ziva fine and curly and Abby coarser, straight. I kept them trimmed short, trimming them a little every week so they got used to grooming. Abby is 15 months and she still looks a bit rough and tumble after a few days. Ziva went to a groomer once and we actually had to bath her when she got home! I use Minksheen shampoo- it has a fresh cedar/ eucalyptus smell but it's not for everyone- it does not set off my daughters allergies. I also use biosilk "fluffy puppy" tearless on their faces.I rinse them after their baths over and over... |
i too use minksheen shampoo , i love it... it leaves oscars coat soft and silky and great smelling for days.. |
I like Yorkie Splash and Shine. To me it has a nice scent. IV San Barnard has green Apple mela verde that is a good product. It is very light in scent. Iv San Bernard USA. Also from that company is the PEK conditioner. My babies have the softest coat ever! And it will last for days! IV SAN BERNARD PEK CONDITIONER |
Wen by Chaz Dean. The pomegranate cleansing conditioner is amazing on the dogs, so is the just retired seasonal pumpkin. |
Thanks! Of course, I would post this question and then my computer would go on the fritz! Just getting back online now, so thank you for all of the helpful comments. I recently tried a sample of the Yorkie Splash & Shine. I like the scent (more of a light herbal vs. floral aroma) and I haven't noticed any allergic reactions. But after 24 hours, he's back to looking like a cute shaggy puppy. Granted, he's an uber cute shaggy puppy, but it would be nice to have more than 24 hours before he starts looking like a ragamuffin again! :animal36 Then again, it doesn't help that I haven't been able to find a groomer for him, so he's stuck with his Mom's less than professional clipping skills! I will explore all of the suggestions! Thanks again and Happy Holidays! |
Another vote for Minksheen I also use Minksheen and I love the herbal smell. My girl is cotton coated and Minksheen does very well on her (although I do keep her in a shorter coat). Recently I tried Yorkie Splash and Shine Conditioner and I liked that very much too. I thought the conditioner made my cotton coated girl a bit more "shiny" than normal as a cotton coat seems to be duller looking. That will be a product I will definitely re-order and the combination of Minksheen Shampoo and Yorkie Splash and Shine Conditioner has been wonderful for me. Good luck- there are TONS of choices out there!!! Merry Christmas! |
I bought Espree Puppy Shampoo and Silk Show conditioner. I really like these products - both are natural and smell very good! |
I use Hy-lyte. I get this from my vet. It is hypo-allergenic and their coats seem to do well with this . |
Yorkie Splash & Shine, hands down! I use nothing but these products and the scent sticks with Toby for days plus he stays very "light and fluffy." I think she has a trial size and I highly recommend trying it. |
How often do you bathe your yorkies? I wash my acorn about twice a week, she gets pretty messy! |
I'm still trying all kinds of Shampoos from Coat handlers concentrate ,Chris Christensen,Yorkie Splash ect... to me noe of them make Mokis coat better or worst. What I like about Coat handlers is you can mix and make it the strength you want and it goes along way. The condition straight is really good. I don't like scented products because they may smell good to me. But to my dog that can smell 100x better than me...really maynot enjoy it?? Unless it smells like a skunk. JMO |
Where can I get Minksheen? I use Yorkie Splash and Shine for Jazi because she's silky coat but Beaumont has a thick cotton coat and is all boy too, like OP, he gets stinky VERY fast!! |
