Reccomended high quality treats? Im currently potty training my 12 week old male yorkie. When he goes outside, I'd like to give him a treat as a reward. I had beggin strips so I cut them up in tiny pieces, but he smelled it and walked away. So I gave him a tiny piece of ham and he went NUTS! He also went nuts when I started mixing in small amounts of his wellness CORE food with the food the breeder fed him. So I take it that he only likes meaty stuff- and no treats like beggin strips, which are made of mostly corn. LOL smart pup! :D I was looking at the Blue buffalo training treats. What high quality treats do you guys reccomend? |
For housebreaking and grooming training, I used Cheerios; they are mostly air and few calories so they aren't interfering with proper nutrition. They are also easy for a puppy to digest and won’t give them diarrhea, like some bigger treats can. I personally would avoid the ham, if I were you, it has lots of salt in it which can be harmful to dogs. Don’t use any processed lunch meats, they all contain too much salt. If you want to use meat, you can boil chicken breast and cut it into tiny pieces, and this is great for other types of training where you need to keep them focused for longer periods of time, but too much can make them not want their kibble and chicken isn't nutritionally balanced. |
I've been ranting about Sojos too much, but... THESE look really good. The "Good Dog" variety are small and skinny and perfect for training. They're $7 per box where I can get them. Might be worth a shot. |
I have a real concern about all the recalls they have on "treats"...they just had a recall on Beggin Strips!...I use a variety of HUMAN foodstuff for "treats"...I make all my own jerky from fresh chicken or venison....or I give Cheerios, Gold Fish crackers, Fruit Loops, Vanilla Wafers, Graham Crackers, Teddy Grahams, green beans, Gerber Toddler chicken sticks (healthy vienna sausage!), fat free bits of string cheese, cucumber,..... |

Premade we use Zuke's Mini Naturals. Sometimes Dogswell supplements like treats. Mostly we use baby carrots, other bits of fruits and vegis. Many here have great success with cheerios & boiled chicken breast. Recently we freeze dried drops of Greek yogurt put in a ketchup bottle dogs loved it!!! |

I would, however, be concerned about the baby food, and the fact that some has onion in it. Onion has a cumulative effect on dogs, and eventually can cause a form of hemolytic anemia called Heinz body anemia. “a condition that causes the destruction of red blood cells. Kidney damage may follow. It is not clear what quantity of onions is poisonous, but the effects can be cumulative. Poisoning can result from raw, cooked and dehydrated forms. Avoid feeding table scraps and any foods cooked with onions (including some baby foods).” Dangerous and Toxic Foods and Your Dog - People Foods That Can Be Poisonous to Dogs |
I just saw their FB alert a friend linked me. I looked it up too just now, yes a single peice of glass in bananas in France. Personally we use Earth's Best babyfoods,& Happy Baby so I didn't really bother to look it up before. Aren't the Gerber meats pretty salty too? I didn't know it had onion in it no good. |

You might be pleasantly surprised with the Sojos treats. I didn't think Tallulah was going to touch their food at all because it's not protein dense, and yet, the pup scarfs it. |

I would not give a yorkie ham there is to much fat and can cause pancreatitis. Also stay very far away from any treats make in China because they are making dogs very sick and killing some. We like zukes, yumzies, cloud star chewy treats and cheerios. |
