Safety Harness for my 7 lb Yorkie
 
Hi
I have a 7 lb Yorkie that "backs out" of her harness. We have tried the main commercial type harnesses and when she does not want to walk forward she sits and literally backs out of her harness. I don't want to attach a leash to her neck collar but that may be my only choice.

Any suggestions? We live in a high traffic area in Brooklyn NY and so far she has done this 3 times with 3 different type harnesses. She is eight years old and lived in a puppymill as a breeder for seven of her eight years so she has a big fear of the big city.

I recommend Choke Free harnesses whole heartedly. they are truly Choke Free and designed by an engineer at NASA in Merritt Island Florida.

Omgosh...I had exactly the same problem and have posted it on many threads as a warning and was starting to feel like an idiot about it, as no one else seems to have this issue.

ZoE backed out of the Puppia step-in harness in my front yard (I live on a main road) and it was scary as could be. I figured I had to have put it on wrong, so made sure it was secure and carried her to the backyard, where she got out of it again, by pulling against the leash, til the leash was tawt, and then backing up. I watched in horror as once again, the harness slipped over her arms and head and she was running free. I threw every harness of that style right in the garbage!

ZoE now has a Buddy Belt leather harnesses and I love them! She has never gotten out of it!!! I highly recommend it. She's secure and it doesn't go anywhere near her neck.

This harness is what I have been looking for and hoped it existed. You have saved the day and possibly my little dogs life.

I heartily recommend the chokefree harness as well. I bought one for Roxy and liked it so much that I bought a another one just in case something happened to the other. We went through several types before I finally found one that she could not back out of or chew up.

The Choke Free is the best harness on the market! I also have and use the Paw Rider seatbelt adapter :thumbup::thumbup:

Is Velcro the only thing holding the Choke Free harness together? I've never actually seen one in person. Looking at the pictures it just looks like velcro holds it together and the D-ring sticks through the slit, but as the slit is wider than the D-ring I'm concerned there might be room for movement.

Basically.... I'm wondering if in an emergency, I had to lift my dog by the leash/harness combo quickly into my arms, would it hold or give under her weight...she's no teacup :D

I would recommend the Buddy Belt. Mine does the same thing... she even escaped the Buddy Belt one time. I have to really snug it on her, and when she stops and reverses, I know now to just go with her, till she's done her little tizzy fit.:D

I haven't really had a problem with the harness I had for Brandy it's by doggy design.. velcro over the neck and chest.. But she is starting to pull so Ijust ordered the permier easy walk they sell it at petsmart.. It has no contact with the neck and is hard to slip out of unless it's unbuckled.. I am looking into the choke free one above.. I really like the look..I also live in New York I know how hard it could be..good luck..

Ellie can't wear step-in harnesses because she does that. It amazes me that so many people on YT don't have this problem. So we use the standard type (I think they are called Roman style). She does much better with them.

We tried a step-in from YT and the Easy Walk. Love the idea of the Easy Walk, but besides the fact that she can get out of it, the mechanism in the front that tightens didn't work well for us because it's so small. I'm sure it would work better on a larger breed dog.

For my other dog - he could easily get loose. So he wears both a Roman style harness and a collar on walks. A coupler is attached to both. The shorter end of the copuler is attached to the harness and the longer end is attached to the collar. Then the leash is attached to the leash ring. So if he pulls, the harness gets pulled and not the collar. But if he slips his harness, the collar is still there for protection.

i have never had a problem with the step in vest harness.
you have a little houdini on your hands, lol...

Jackson has slipped out of a regular nylon step-in harness fairly easily too. He did it once on the regular Puppia too. But I tend to keep things looser than they probably should be... lol.
