Best gate to use for small yorkie I have bought two gates so far in one month. The purpose is to put it up in the kitchen and potentially move it to allow pup to have access of kitchen. Bathroom an front hallway. The first gate was bought at home depot. Wooden with the crosses white fencing and it was very flimsy. Fell Alot and wasn't snug to the wall. I bought another from petco that us the wooden small step over gate with doggie door latch. I don't think it's tall enough and yesterday she somehow managed to open the door latch and get out. She doesn't cry in her crate nut she does cry when left in kitchen. Which I am confused about. There is more to do in the open kitchen. Toes. Water. Pads for bathroom. Which gate is best to contain a yorkie and is there a reason she hates the kitchen? Is it that she just doesn't like the gate? |
I have always used cheap baby gates from Walmart and they have worked for me. My golden 120 pounds never knocked them down. You could also try a babies playpen. I used it with mine when they were small and sometimes still use it if they are sick. I used it instead of a crate. My golden slept in his til he was too big to easy lift in. |
I ordered a Carlson Pet gate I ordered it from walmart.com. Realyy like it it even has a smaller door so just smaller dog can go through... Think I paid $30 for it. |
Gates I also use the baby gates from Walmart and they work great. My yorkies nor my schnauzer have ever knocked one down or jumped them |
Baby gates from baby stores are the way to go! I bought our labrador an old-fashioned wooden playpen once - and she ran straight through the bars aaargh! I felt like an idiot. Are you leaving her crate with the door open in the gated kitchen? She still needs her den, the space otherwise might feel too big and scarey! Sally + Harry x |
I have never had to use a baby gate but have read posts of those who have. If I had need of one, the main thing that would concern me would be if it was secure from falling down. A very long time ago I read a post about a gate ... a child leaned over to kiss the little one goodby before school and fell into the gate which came loose, fell, and killed the little Yorkie ... the child was devestated. I don't mean to bring up bad memories for anyone who might remember but I think of it every time I see discussions about gates. We have always had great success with X-pens if we have need to contain Toto, even used it for doorways. She is very small so I don't know how it would work for larger furbabies. I used the same gate I believe you're talking about from PetSmart, however neither dog has ever gotten through it. Are you sure the latch was securely closed? A few months ago we allowed them access to the entire downstairs, so we don't use it anymore, but if we need another one I would def. buy that one again. We used to get baby gates which secured very well just like the small wooden one, but it was much harder to step over for someone who is only 5 feet haha. |
I use this gate  Amazon.com: Evenflo Summit Pressure Mounted Metal... and have not had problems with my Yorkie escaping. It is a bit of a pain to set up, and can be hard to open, but seems pretty escape-proof. I would suggest leaving her crate in the kitchen with her, or using a playpen instead. If there are people in the house while she is left in the kitchen, she is crying because she wants to get to you. |

gates and expen 2 Attachment(s) I have two baby gates from wal-mart for the doorways for the bedroom and bathroom (they sleep in the bathroom) and an expen to restrict access to the house - they have access to the living room, dining room and kitchen; the expen keeps them restricted from the spare rooms, den, laundry room and front entry way. I will probably keep this up for years to come as I never have to worry about them sprinting out the front door. The pics show how I have my pen set up - the first how it is normally, and the second how I open it to walk out. |
