Regular collars, break-away collars - so confused! Dash is 7 months and we don't have a collar for her. I would feel better if she would wear one just for an id just incase she would get outside. We use a harness for walks. Anyway, why can't anything be simple? I go to search for collars and there are thick ones, thin ones, leather, nylon, some people say "No, collars are bad, they could choke, use a breakaway.." others say, "Yes, collars are fine, we've been using them for years..." I'm confused. I have no idea where to buy a nice collar, a safe collar or an id tag :( Can anyone point me in the right direction? |
It's a matter of preference. Some like regular collars, some like breakaways. I like the breakaways because my little one is a spazz and won't watch where he's going when he's excited. Anyway, I got mine off eBay. They're cotton collars which are washable and sturdy. They didn't seem to bad in price either. Tags are also as varied as collars. Some are over $30 and others are $1. The ones that have names and info printed on tend to rub off easier. The ones that are laser enscribed last longer. I think I got mine from rossipettags.com or something along those lines. They were nice and allowed me to put special characters that were not on the list. |
I think it depends on how you are going to use the collar- if it was something you were planning to leave on a lot, even when unsupervised I would probably go with a breakaway. Callie wears a collar all the time except during her bath. I dont use the breakaway collars for fear that if she got out some how it would break off to easy but Callie has never been home alone so I dont have to worry about her getting stuck when shes alone because she never is. I used to go to petsmart and get the lilpals collars but then I started going to etsy.com and getting them from there. I wont get anything thicker then 3/8" because anything else seems to thick for a small dog and not very comfortable. I am very picky about my collars I make sure there isnt anything thats gonna poke her or make her uncomfortable. I got Callies tag off of ebay they have a lot of different ones. |
Well I guess I want something that I can put on and leave on. If I'm going to be gone and put her in her crate for a couple of hours, can she get hurt with a regular collar? She is supervised when I am home and she has free-run of the house. I dont want to have to take the collar on and off throughout the day if I leave and have to put her in her crate. |
I'm a collar freak. I have everything ranging from really tiny 1/2" collars to 3/4" leather collars (but I have a 16lb dog). The thicker collars I do not leave on 24/7 ... only for "show" if we are going out somewhere. I like using the regular nylon collars that are about 1/2"-5/8" in size for tag collars to keep him all day long. He has a Fetching Tag attached at all times. I do take it off at night a lot of times simply for comfort reasons. |
I'm really glad you asked this question because I've been thinking of keeping a tag and collar on Nilla for safety purposes. I feel bad about leaving one on her at all times, but I want her to be identifiable at all times between dog nappings being up statistically and worrisome weather conditions. I was also just wondering if it'd be best to use a regular collar or a breakaway. I'd hate to think of her getting snagged on something if she was out on her own, but if you have a breakaway then you run the risk of it, obviously, breaking off and then just hope that someone scans the microchip! I don't think there's a really win-win situation here, but I'd like to take as many precautions as I can without inconveniencing Nilla and her comfort. |
I have a collar on Gracie just so she has her ID tag on at all times. She is chipped but I am not taking any chances. I bought a really pretty hand made collar on ebay for her. If you put in whatever color you want, like "pink flowered dog collar" you will get all kinds of results. Some of the people who make them have quite a wide variety of colors and types. If your dog likes to get into things or is out in the yard alone you might want to go with a break away collar. I know many of the cat collars are break away and you can usually find them at Walmart or a store like that. It really depends on your particular situation and preferences as to what you choose. I walk Gracie with her harness on. She has a really sensitive throat but the collar it's self does not bother her. As long as I walk her with the harness she is fine. |
I use lots of collars on Fido ! Both thick and sturdy leather collars or thin nylon collars. I reccomand using a cat collar if she gets her collar stuck somewhere, if she isn't peeking everywhere and getting her collar stuck then its okay to use a normal dog collar :) Its best to use just normal nylon collars inside, watch out for not having it too tight and not too loose ! Have it that tight that you can't pull it off her head but not tighter, when its a bit loose but doesn't get off the head its perfect :) |
