HELP!Muzzle for 9 pound Yorkie. Hi: My 9 pound Yorkie sniffs all the time on walks and I can't tell when he going to eat what he sniffs. Yikes!! Today he sniffed what I thought was a thin little stick about 2 inches long in the grass, and then before I knew it he had eaten it. I quickly opened his mouth and there it was about to be swallowed whole, but I GOT IT! It was part of a very old chicken leg. That would have been emergency surgery and/or worse. So I wondered if anyone knows where I can get a muzzle or something like it to stop him eating things on walks??? The joys of owning an earth dog. LOL. Thank you! |
How about trying the "no-sniff" command. I hired a trainer when Cooper was a puppy and she said that his nose should not be down on the ground during his entire walk. So whenever he stuck his nose to the ground I would say "no-sniff" and give him a treat. It eventually worked. |
No Sniff Hi; Thanks for the tip and I will try it. It will be hard though and take time I am sure as he lives for food and sniffs. LOL. Any ideas in the meantime would be much appreciated. |
I got a muzzle that fit mine at petsmart. |
Muzzle Hi Thank you for the Petsmart info. I did not think they would have such small items. I appreciate your kindness and replies. Thank you. |
Do you have a photo of your little boy?:) |
|
Muzzle Thanks for the photo, it looks just like I want. What reason did you have for needing it? As for the photo, I will try and find one and attempt to put it on YT. Thanks again! |
I have to watch Tibbe like a hawk and use the "leave it" command or he would eat the entire outside world, I think! |

I think this is a training issue. Their noses are sooo sensitive that they do want to sniff "everything" and they will as long as they're allowed to. But as said - his walks should be for "walking" not investigating - lol! Try doing a quick "leave it" - a gentle tug away from the item - a "good boy" and continue walking. Training does take time but he will learn with the repetition. Let us know how he does with whatever method you use. :) |
Muzzle YT Jilly: Thanks for your help. I am glad I am not alone with this problem and that your Tibbe is (was) also a sniffer/eater of the world. CJ: I agree it is a training problem and am trying the no sniff command - but it is harder with an 'earth dog' to overcome instinct. I adopted him at 18 months and have had quite a lot of issues to deal with so far. He is over 2 yrs now and doing very well in most things. (On another matter, I am very sad that he has just been diagnosed with cataract in one eye that may require surgery. It was a great shock and came on so suddenly, but he is so healthy thank God in all other ways. It is very unusual at such a young age and I do feel so sorry for the poor little mite. Please excuse this post part as it is not in the right place, but I am so upset about this and had to tell someone!) |
What????? You just found this out? Oh I'm so sorry. Maybe create a new thread on this matter to get some information from fellow YT'ers |
I needed it when I was grooming my dogs- the would turn around and try to bite the brush or scissors which was dangerous, so this was recommended as a way to prevent any injury. They only ever have it on for 10 minutes at a time or less. |
muzzle Thank you Armani man! The little terror. LOL |
Oh, I am so sorry to hear about the baby's cataract! Thank goodness there is now surgery if it comes to that, though. |
