Gentle Leader Question I saw in another thread a couple of posters mentioning that gentle leaders are not good for Yorkies. Didn't want to continue the subject in that thread, but could someone tell me why they don't like this item? The trainer that's helping me with Tallulah recommended I get one because she keeps squirming out of the easy leader harness I got for her, despite efforts to make it fit her properly. If it's not safe for Tallulah, I will keep working on a harness that fits properly and pass on the head collar. TIA! |

I don't know if I have the Gentle or the Easy Leader, but it fit Cooper perfectly and he squirmed out of it twice. I have no idea how he got out but i quickly replaced that harness. The Buddy Belts are awesome. |
I had good luck with the Easy Walk (harness with d-ring on front instead of back). Jackson is a bigger Yorkie though but I used it when he was a pup. It taught him to walk on a leash in a matter of a few days! I was very pleased with it. Are you talking about the one that goes over their muzzle? I've never used that one. Unfortunately, the Buddy Belt did not work for us. (It's not a "non-pulling" harness, btw). I loved the quality of it but it fit Jackson weird :( We've been using Puppia and chattiesmom's silk harnesses. She can make one with a d-ring on front AND back which I found to be extremely helpful. |
Tink gets out of all the head collars, or she'll just refuse to walk with them on (which is the last thing I ever expected from her). Finni slipped her harness in about 2 seconds one time. I about had a heart attack. Now they're all in Buddie Belts, and I am going back to walking them separately to train and teach them some manners. Occasionally I'll walk two at once, just for socializing and practice. I think they really like having me all to themselves though. :D |
I honestly see no problem using a gentle leader on a yorkie as long as it is fitted properly. They should not be able to get out of them (tho some pups do have lots of tricks up their sleeves and do manage it somehow). I think they work better on yorkies built like Britster's Jackson then my Morgan. Jackson is a big, muscular boy with a longer muzzle and Morgan is a petite little girl with a short muzzle. I've had problems with the Easy Walk harness on a beagle that comes to my shop for day care. It loosens up and he can get his leg out of it if your not paying attention. |
