Dog couplers Okay, so I had posted this in the product review section, but only receive on reply. I am going try it here instead. So, it gets frustrating sometimes with two leashes. They often tangle up and I get embarrassed having to untangle it as people walk by. I feel like a crazy dog lady! So, I remembered hearing about leash couplers so I can walk dogs with just one leash! I was wondering if anyone uses it and can suggest where to get it? I looked online and don't know which to get and where has the best price. I currently have two yorkies, but will be adding another in a year so I want one where I can add an additional coupler in the future. Please let me know! Thanks! __________________ |
The only thing I know about it is that one poster here, sometime ago, posted that she used one for her two dogs and it caused an injury to the neck of one of them. |
I recently purchased a coupler from my local pet store, and I LOVE it. It was like $9 and I couldn't be happier. I am now able to easily walk my two without getting them tangled... I don't know how it could hurt their necks if you use a harness? I would definitely recommend using a coupler. |
I see them all the time at my favorite pet store. I seem to find them more at dog boutiques and Mom & Pop dog stores, than chain stores like Petco. |
I found mine at PetCo. I believe Petsmart has them as well. My two yorkies are pretty different size wise, but it works great. They do not get tangled up anymore :) |
I like them but it depends for what dogs. If you have two dogs walking at totally different paces, or one bigger than the other, I find it not to work as well. I've walked Jackson plus my dads dogs, so totaling 3 dogs together, and I would put Buddy and Jackson on the coupler since they don't pull and walk at a fairly equal pace, and put Lily on a leash by herself since she pulls and pulls. I find it irritating though when one wants to go sniff, and the other doesn't, or situations like that. Whenever Buddy would get a wiff of something, he'd tug Jackson along with him, and vice versa. So I like the coupler when I'm walking 3 dogs but with 2, I'd prefer 2 separate leashes. |

I can make couplers - one with two links, three links, or with two links and a third link that would be removeable. The problem that a lot of people have with couplers is the dogs getting tangled, crossed, one pulling the other, etc. Successful use of a coupler requires that each dog be trained to walk nicely on a leash and to respond to voice commands BEFORE putting them together. I learned about teaming two up before each was trained with the miniature horses I was teaching to drive. :D No one was hurt but it wasn't pretty :D:D:D. Now my rules are each member of a team must be trained BETTER than if they were to be used as a single -- same rules applies to dogs. |

A lady named Tammy makes custom couplers with nice swivel couplers that prevent them from tangling. She basically took my information and made what I needed. You can pick any color or combination of colors and width of straps. They are very strong. The leash comes with them too for that price! Her ebay name is tjs1962. Here is a sample listing: 3 DOG COUPLER LEASH 3/8"X 5' NYLON SWIVEL SNAP EACH END - eBay (item 130397765478 end time Jan-29-11 20:48:22 PST) She had to me in just a few days and the quality was great! I could not believe the price -- $17.99 + Free shipping for a tripler (3 dog coupler) and leash in my choice of color & width. She actually made one of mine a little stronger for my Jack Russell. She adjusted the lengths too so that it works just right with one dog being a little larger than my yorkies. I use mine with their harnesses and have never had a problem with any of choking as nothing touches their throats. I color coordinated with my harnesses too so it looks like a whole matching set. |
I have a 3 dog coupler that I got in Vegas. They still get wound around each other, but I quit trying to keep them seperate. Here is a site that has nice ones: Dog Leads, Dog Leash - FunnyFur.com |
